Jean-Claude Van Damme

Jean-Claude Van Damme is a Belgian actor and martial artist who established himself as a major international action cinema star. Born Jean-Claude Camille François Van Varenberg in Brussels, Belgium, he achieved global fame through his roles in martial arts and action feature films, eventually becoming an iconic figure in the genre whose projects have generated over $3.3 billion at the worldwide box office.

Raised in Brussels, Van Damme was enrolled in a Shōtōkan karate school by his father at the age of ten. He expanded his physical training into kickboxing, ballet, Taekwondo, and Muay Thai, eventually attaining a second-dan black belt in karate. Beyond martial arts, he studied ballet for five years as a teenager and earned the Mr. Belgium bodybuilding title in 1978. During his competitive career from the late 1970s to the early 1980s, he recorded numerous victories in semi-contact and full-contact karate matches, winning the European Professional Karate Association middleweight championship in 1979 as part of the Belgian team.

Before moving to the United States in 1982 to pursue a Hollywood acting career, Van Damme owned and operated a successful fitness gym in Brussels. In America, he supported himself through various jobs, including working as a bouncer, limousine driver, private karate instructor, and background extra. After taking small roles in films such as No Retreat, No Surrender and briefly participating in the production of Predator, he secured his breakout leading role in the 1988 martial arts film Bloodsport, which became a major commercial hit.

Following his initial breakthrough, Van Damme starred in a sequence of successful action films throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, including Cyborg, Kickboxer, Lionheart, Death Warrant, and Double Impact, in which he played dual roles as twin brothers. He maintained his box-office popularity with prominent releases such as Universal Soldier, Nowhere to Run, Hard Target, Timecop, Street Fighter, Sudden Death, and Maximum Risk. In 1996, he made his directorial debut with The Quest. During this era, he also collaborated with several notable Hong Kong filmmakers making their debuts in Western cinema.

After a decline in popularity, Van Damme earned critical acclaim for playing a fictionalized version of himself in the 2008 crime drama JCVD. He returned to big-budget action cinema as the primary antagonist in The Expendables 2 in 2012. His subsequent work includes action films such as Enemies Closer, The Bouncer, and Darkness of Man, voice work in animated features like Minions: The Rise of Gru, and starring in the television series Jean-Claude Van Johnson. Outside of his entertainment career, he publicly supports environmental conservation causes and animal rights organizations.
