Mickey Rourke

Philip Andre "Mickey" Rourke Jr. is an American actor and former professional boxer born on September 16, 1952, in Schenectady, New York. Raised Catholic with Irish and French ancestry, he moved to South Florida after his parents divorced and graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School in 1971. After appearing in a production of Deathwatch at the University of Miami, Rourke moved to New York to pursue acting, studying under Walter Lott and Sandra Seacat at the Actors Studio.

During his youth, Rourke focused on amateur boxing, training at the Boys Club of Miami and the 5th Street Gym. Competing from 1964 to 1973, he compiled a record of 27 wins and three defeats. After suffering concussions during sparring with Luis Rodríguez and at the 1971 Florida Golden Gloves, he temporarily stepped away from boxing on medical advice.

Rourke made his feature film debut in 1941 (1979) and gained critical recognition for his role in Body Heat (1981). He won a National Society of Film Critics Award for Diner (1982) and established himself as a prominent leading man throughout the 1980s. His notable films from this period include Rumble Fish (1983), The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984), Year of the Dragon (1985), 9½ Weeks (1986), Angel Heart (1987), Barfly (1987), and Johnny Handsome (1989). He also authored and starred in the 1988 film Homeboy.

In 1991, Rourke paused his acting career to box professionally. Trained by Chuck Zito and Freddie Roach, he fought internationally and achieved an undefeated record of six wins and two draws across eight matches. His physical injuries, which included a broken nose, compressed cheekbone, and split tongue, required reconstructive facial surgery. He retired from professional boxing in 1994, later competing in a single exhibition match in Moscow in 2014.

Upon returning to acting, Rourke took supporting roles in films such as The Rainmaker (1997), Buffalo '66 (1998), Animal Factory (2000), The Pledge (2001), Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003), and Man on Fire (2004). He also wrote screenplays under the pseudonym Sir Eddie Cook, including Bullet (1996), appeared in Enrique Iglesias's "Hero" music video, and provided voice work for the video game Driver 3.

In 2005, Rourke made a major Hollywood comeback starring as Marv in Sin City, winning several critics' awards. His resurgence reached its peak in The Wrestler (2008), where his portrayal of Randy "The Ram" Robinson earned him a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA Award, and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He subsequently co-starred in major releases including Iron Man 2 (2010), The Expendables (2010), and Immortals (2011), later focusing primarily on independent films and direct-to-video projects.
