Julia Garner

Julia Garner is an American actress born on February 1, 1994. She gained widespread recognition for playing Ruth Langmore in the Netflix crime drama series Ozark (2017–2022), a role that earned her critical acclaim, three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and a Golden Globe Award. She is also known for portraying Anna Sorokin in the Netflix miniseries Inventing Anna (2022), receiving nominations for both a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award.

Garner was born in the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx, New York. Her mother, Tamar Gingold, is a therapist and former Israeli actress and comedian, while her father, Thomas Garner, is a painter and art teacher. Garner is Jewish and has an older sister, Anna. She attended Eagle Hill School in Greenwich, Connecticut, and began taking acting lessons at age 15 to overcome shyness. During the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, she studied clowning under Philippe Gaulier at École Philippe Gaulier in France.

Garner made her film debut at age 17 in Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011). In 2012, she landed her first lead role in Electrick Children and appeared in Not Fade Away. She subsequently starred in horror films such as The Last Exorcism Part II and We Are What We Are, followed by roles in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014) and the comedy Grandma (2015). On television, she had a recurring role in the FX spy-thriller series The Americans from 2015 to 2018.

Following her breakthrough in Ozark, Garner appeared in the miniseries Waco (2018), Netflix's Maniac (2018), and the Bravo true crime series Dirty John (2018–2019). In 2019, she was featured in the Amazon anthology series Modern Love and starred in the independent drama film The Assistant, earning an Independent Spirit Award nomination for her performance.

In 2022, Garner portrayed title fraudster Anna Delvey in Shonda Rhimes's Inventing Anna. Her production company, Alma Margo, signed a first-look deal with Tomorrow Studios, and she was cast in the thriller film Apartment 7A. She subsequently starred in the drama film The Royal Hotel in 2023.

Garner was chosen to portray Madonna in her self-produced biopic Who's That Girl. She was cast as Shalla-Bal / Silver Surfer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and took on roles in the horror films Wolf Man and Weapons, with all three releasing in 2025. In her personal life, Garner married singer Mark Foster in December 2019, and the couple announced their separation in July 2026.
