Matthew Rhys

Matthew Rhys is a Welsh actor born on 8 November 1974 in Cardiff, Wales. Known for portraying morally complex protagonists, he has received four Primetime Emmy Awards, becoming the first and only actor in Emmys history to win in all three Lead Actor categories. Across his career, he has also received nominations for two Actor Awards, two BAFTAs, and four Golden Globe Awards.

Rhys grew up in Cardiff with his older sister, Rachel, and attended Welsh-medium schools, Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Melin Gruffydd and Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf. In 1993, he was awarded the Patricia Rothermere Scholarship. At age 17, after playing Elvis Presley in a school musical, he was accepted to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. During his studies, he appeared in the television series Backup and the film House of America, and later won a BAFTA Cymru Best Actor award for the Welsh film Bydd yn Wrol.

In the late 1990s and 2000s, Rhys appeared in television projects such as Greenstone, Metropolis, and Columbo, alongside stage productions including the West End adaptation of The Graduate. His early film roles included Titus, Whatever Happened to Harold Smith?, The Testimony of Taliesin Jones, Very Annie Mary, The Abduction Club, Tabloid, Deathwatch, Fakers, and Love and Other Disasters. In 2006, he gained widespread recognition after moving to the United States and landing the role of lawyer Kevin Walker on the ABC drama series Brothers & Sisters, which ran for five seasons through 2011.

Rhys achieved further acclaim starring as Russian sleeper agent Philip Jennings in the FX Cold War spy drama series The Americans from 2013 to 2018, winning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for its final season. During this period, he also portrayed poet Dylan Thomas in The Edge of Love, Fitzwilliam Darcy in Death Comes to Pemberley, Daniel Ellsberg in The Post, and Lloyd Vogel in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, alongside earning an Emmy nomination for a guest role in Girls.

From 2020 to 2023, Rhys starred in the HBO series Perry Mason. In 2025, he played Nile Jarvis in the Netflix miniseries The Beast in Me and performed in the one-man Welsh stage play Playing Burton. In 2026, he starred in the Apple TV+ comedy-horror series Widow's Bay. At the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, he won Outstanding Lead Actor categories for both The Beast in Me and Widow's Bay, while also sharing an Emmy as an executive producer when Widow's Bay won Outstanding Comedy Series.

Rhys has voiced characters in animated productions, including Infinity Train, The Owl House, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, The Wingfeather Saga, and Invincible. Outside acting, he established his production company, Patagonia, in 2011, owns a charter yacht named Rarebit, and has supported community efforts to save historical Welsh pubs. He has been in a relationship with actress Keri Russell since 2014, with whom he has a son, and he supports Plaid Cymru and Welsh independence.
