Raised in Brooklyn, New York, Hernández is of Honduran ancestry. He began his acting journey during his high school years, where he first participated in performances. He later briefly pursued formal acting studies at the City College of New York and worked as a stage actor prior to relocating to Los Angeles, California, to advance his career in film and television.
During the earlier stages of his professional screen career, Hernández secured guest-appearing roles on television series such as Law & Order, 24, and Numbers. He also crossed over into feature films, making an appearance in the movie Hotel for Dogs. Furthermore, he joined director Gavin O'Connor for parts in two of the filmmaker's feature projects, Pride and Glory and Warrior.
Hernández achieved widespread visibility through his multi-project involvement with Marvel Studios, portraying the Marvel Comics character Jasper Sitwell. He made brief initial appearances as Sitwell in the feature films Thor in 2011 and The Avengers in 2012. In 2013, Hernández was cast in the first season of The Americans, portraying FBI Agent Chris Amador. The project reunited him with director Gavin O'Connor, who helmed the show's pilot episode. Hernández ended his run on the series in its ninth episode. His performance drew praise from Grantland critic Andy Greenwald, who described his work as wonderful and commended his ability to render a peripheral character memorable and strangely noble despite having limited screen time.
Continuing his work in feature films, Hernández appeared in the 2015 crime action-thriller Sicario, directed by Denis Villeneuve. In the film, he portrayed a corrupt police officer serving in the state of Sonora.
