Tadanobu Asano

Tadanobu Asano, born Tadanobu Satō on November 27, 1973, is a Japanese actor, director, and musician recognized for his extensive career across Japanese and international media. He is widely known for his versatility in independent cinema, major studio features, and global television productions.

Asano was born in the Honmoku neighborhood of Yokohama to his artist father, Yukihisa Satō, and his mother, Junko. Through his maternal grandfather, Willard Overing, he is of one-quarter American lineage. His family maintained strong ties to the entertainment industry; his older brother, Kujun Satō, is a musician, and Asano collaborated with his father to establish the talent agency Anore Inc., later known as Adonis A, which he remained affiliated with until 2022.

Following his father's encouragement, Asano began his acting career at age sixteen in the television project Kinpachi Sensei. His cinematic debut occurred in the 1990 film Swimming Upstream, followed by an early breakthrough in Fried Dragon Fish in 1993. He achieved international acclaim starring in Hirokazu Kore-eda's 1995 drama Maboroshi no Hikari, playing a young husband and father. He subsequently starred in a wide variety of Japanese projects, including Gohatto, Distance, Ichi the Killer, Bright Future, Zatoichi, and The Taste of Tea.

Asano's international profile expanded through lead roles in Pen-Ek Ratanaruang's films Last Life in the Universe and Invisible Waves, as well as his performance as Temujin in Sergei Bodrov's historical drama Mongol. He also took on prominent roles in major Hollywood movies, portraying Hogun in Marvel's Thor series, Lord Kira Yoshinaka in 47 Ronin, the Interpreter in Silence, Rear Admiral Tamon Yamaguchi in Midway, and Raiden in Mortal Kombat.

In 2024, Asano earned further international prominence for portraying Lord Kashigi Yabushige in the American television adaptation of Shōgun. Over the course of his career, he has worked under acclaimed directors including Takeshi Kitano, Nagisa Ōshima, Takashi Miike, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Martin Scorsese, Kenneth Branagh, Wong Kar-wai, and Roland Emmerich. Outside of acting, he has directed commercials, modeled for fashion brands such as Jun Takahashi and Takeo Kikuchi, and performed as a musician in bands including MACH-1.67, Peace Pill, and Safari.

Asano's performances have earned him multiple accolades, including the Upstream Prize for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival, the Best Actor Award at the Moscow International Film Festival, and two Best Actor awards at the Yokohama Film Festival. He has also received five Japan Academy Film Prize nominations, a Golden Globe Award for his role in Shōgun, and his first Primetime Emmy Award nomination.

In his personal life, Asano married J-pop singer Chara in March 1995 after meeting on the set of the film Picnic. They had two children, daughter Sumire and son Himi, before their divorce in July 2009. In August 2022, Asano married model and actress Kurumi Nakata.
