Kitsch was born in Kelowna, British Columbia, to Susan, who worked for the BC Liquor Board, and Drew Kitsch, who worked in construction. Following his parents' separation when he was one year old, he and his two older brothers were raised by their mother in a mobile home park. He also has two younger maternal half-sisters. Raised in Port Moody and Anmore, he attended Gleneagle Secondary School in Coquitlam. Kitsch began playing ice hockey at age three and played junior ice hockey for the Langley Hornets until a knee injury ended his career in 2002. Afterwards, he studied nutrition and economics at the University of Lethbridge for a year.
In 2003, Kitsch moved to New York City to pursue modeling with IMG and study acting. He supported himself as a nutritionist and personal trainer while experiencing homelessness for a period. He relocated to Los Angeles in 2004, modeling for brands such as Diesel and Abercrombie & Fitch. His breakout role arrived in 2006 when he was cast as Tim Riggins, a high school fullback/running back, on Friday Night Lights. He portrayed the character for five seasons, establishing his television career.
Following his television breakthrough, Kitsch appeared in films such as The Covenant and portrayed Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009. In 2010, he starred in the historical drama The Bang Bang Club, losing 35 pounds to play photojournalist Kevin Carter. He subsequently starred in several 2012 feature films, playing the title character in Disney's John Carter, Lieutenant Alex Hopper in Battleship, and a lead role in Oliver Stone's Savages. His film work continued with roles in The Grand Seduction, Lone Survivor, American Assassin, Only the Brave, and 21 Bridges.
In addition to feature films, Kitsch has taken on prominent roles in television projects. He appeared in the 2014 HBO film The Normal Heart and joined the main cast for the second season of HBO's True Detective in 2015. In 2018, he portrayed cult leader David Koresh in the Paramount Network miniseries Waco. He later starred in the German television series The Defeated in 2020 and played CIA Ground Branch operative Ben Edwards in the Amazon Prime Video series The Terminal List in 2022 and The Terminal List: Dark Wolf in 2025. He was also cast in the 2025 Netflix series American Primeval alongside Betty Gilpin.
Outside of acting, Kitsch has resided in Bozeman, Montana, after previously purchasing land on Lake Austin, Texas, in 2012. After befriending retired Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell while working on Lone Survivor, Kitsch developed an interest in veterans' issues.
