Connie Britton

Connie Britton (born Constance Elaine Womack on March 6, 1967) is an American actress. She gained early recognition for her roles in television series such as Spin City, The West Wing, and 24. She achieved further prominence starring as Tami Taylor in Friday Night Lights, Vivien Harmon in American Horror Story: Murder House, and Rayna Jaymes in Nashville. Her accolades include nominations for five Primetime Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards.

Britton was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and raised in Rockville, Maryland, and Lynchburg, Virginia, alongside her fraternal twin sister, Cynthia. Her father, Edgar Allen Womack, Jr., was a physicist and energy executive, and her mother was Linda Jane. Britton attended E. C. Glass High School, where she acted in plays. She majored in Asian studies with a concentration in Chinese at Dartmouth College, studying in Beijing during her freshman summer. After graduating in 1989, she moved to New York City to train at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre under Sanford Meisner.

Britton made her theatrical debut in The Early Girl and her feature film debut in The Brothers McMullen (1995). Moving to Los Angeles, she landed a recurring role on Ellen and co-starred as Nikki Faber on Spin City from 1996 to 2000. Over the following decade, she appeared in independent films such as Looking for Kitty and The Next Big Thing, and took recurring roles in series including The Fugitive, The West Wing, and 24, as well as the television film Child Star: The Shirley Temple Story.

From 2006 to 2011, Britton starred as high school guidance counselor Tami Taylor in Friday Night Lights, receiving two Primetime Emmy nominations, two TCA Award nominations, and a Satellite Award. She followed this in 2011 with a starring role as Vivien Harmon in American Horror Story: Murder House, which earned her another Emmy nomination. During this time, her film appearances included Women in Trouble, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Conception.

In 2012, Britton began producing and starring as country singer Rayna Jaymes in the drama series Nashville, earning Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Her later television projects include 9-1-1, Dirty John (earning a Golden Globe nomination), The White Lotus (earning an Emmy nomination), Dear Edward, and Zero Day. Her film work includes Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, This Is Where I Leave You, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Beatriz at Dinner, Promising Young Woman, and Luckiest Girl Alive.

Britton was married to investment banker John Britton from 1991 to 1995, adopted a son from Ethiopia in 2011, and confirmed a relationship with producer David Windsor in 2023. Beyond acting, she supports Democratic political causes and became a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme in 2014, focusing on eradicating extreme poverty and empowering women.
