Carlos Bernard

Carlos Bernard Papierski is an American actor and director best known for playing Tony Almeida in the television series 24. Throughout his career, he has built a work history spanning stage productions, feature films, and recurring television roles.

Bernard was born on October 12, 1962, in Evanston, Illinois, and raised in Chicago alongside his two older brothers. He is of Polish and Spanish background, with his mother coming from Madrid, Spain. His initial interest in acting developed during his high school years at New Trier High School, where he graduated in 1980. He went on to attend Illinois State University, earning a bachelor's degree in 1991, and subsequently obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree from the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.

Beginning his professional career on stage, Bernard performed in several productions with the American Conservatory Theater, including Good alongside William Hurt, As You Like It, Hamlet, The Diary of Anne Frank, and The Cherry Orchard. He also appeared in a production of Scenes from an Execution opposite Frank Langella at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles.

Bernard transitioned into television with a regular role on the daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless. His career achieved significant recognition in 2001 when he was cast as Tony Almeida in 24. He played the role from 2001 to 2006 and returned to the character in 2009. He further reprised the role in 2014 for 24: Solitary and again in 2017 for 24: Legacy.

In addition to his primary television roles, Bernard has made guest appearances on multiple series, such as Walker, Texas Ranger, Burn Notice, F/X: The Series, Babylon 5, and Silk Stalkings. His film work includes appearances in Alien Raiders, Vegas, City of Dreams, The Killing Jar, and the short film The Colonel's Last Flight.

Bernard speaks English, Spanish, Russian, and German fluently. He has a child born in August 2003 with his former spouse, Sharisse Baker. In 2013, he married actress Tessie Santiago, with whom he has a son born in August 2018. Through his work on 24, he maintained friendships with co-stars Kiefer Sutherland, Reiko Aylesworth, and Mary Lynn Rajskub.
