Jean Smart

Jean Elizabeth Smart is an American actress recognized for her work across television, film, and theater, spanning both comedic and dramatic genres. Throughout her career, she has won seven Primetime Emmy Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards, alongside nominations for a Grammy Award and a Tony Award. First gaining widespread recognition on television in the late 1980s, she has sustained a prominent presence across stage and screen for over four decades.

Smart was born on September 13, 1951, in Seattle, Washington, to Kathleen Marie and Douglas Alexander Smart, a teacher. Raised as the second of four children, she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age thirteen. She developed an interest in acting at Ballard High School before graduating in 1969. She subsequently earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Professional Actors Training Program at the University of Washington.

After college, Smart performed in regional theater across the Pacific Northwest, including the Seattle Repertory Theater and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Moving to New York City in the mid-1970s, she appeared off-Broadway and earned a Drama Desk Award nomination in 1981. That same year, she made her Broadway debut portraying Marlene Dietrich in the biographical play Piaf. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, she expanded into screen acting with guest appearances on television shows such as The Facts of Life and Alice.

Smart achieved her career breakthrough starring as Charlene Frazier Stillfield on the CBS sitcom Designing Women from 1986 to 1991. Following her departure, she starred in television movies such as Overkill: The Aileen Wuornos Story and feature films including Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey and The Brady Bunch Movie. During the late 1990s, she headlined sitcoms like High Society and received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for her role in the drama Guinevere.

During the 2000s, Smart earned critical acclaim and multiple Emmy Awards for her television roles, including guest appearances as Lana Gardner on Frasier and her supporting performance on Samantha Who?. She received additional Emmy nominations for playing First Lady Martha Logan on 24. Her stage work continued with a Tony Award-nominated performance in the 2000 Broadway revival of The Man Who Came to Dinner, while her film credits during this period included Sweet Home Alabama, Garden State, and I Heart Huckabees.

Smart remained highly active in the 2010s and 2020s, earning praise for roles in series such as Fargo, Legion, Watchmen, and Mare of Easttown, alongside film appearances in The Accountant and Babylon. Starting in 2021, she starred as stand-up comedian Deborah Vance in the comedy series Hacks, winning four Primetime Emmy Awards for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series between 2021 and 2025. In recent years, Smart hosted Saturday Night Live in 2024, returned to Broadway in the 2025 one-woman play Call Me Izzy, and underwent heart surgery in 2023.
