Shania Twain

Eilleen Regina "Shania" Twain is a Canadian country singer and songwriter who has sold more than 100 million records worldwide. Widely referred to as the "Queen of Country Pop," she is the best-selling female artist in country music history. Billboard recognized her as the leader of the country pop crossover movement during the 1990s.

Twain was born Eilleen Regina Edwards in Windsor, Ontario, on August 28, 1965. Her mother moved the family to Timmins, Ontario, and married Jerry Twain, an Ojibwe man who adopted Twain. Raised in poverty and an abusive household, she began singing in bars at age eight to help support her family. In her youth, she performed with a local band called Longshot and worked in her adoptive father's reforestation business.

Following the death of her mother and adoptive father in a 1987 car accident, Twain supported her younger siblings by performing at the Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, Ontario. In the early 1990s, she signed with Mercury Nashville Records and adopted the stage name Shania. Her self-titled debut album was released in 1993, generating minor hits and achieving platinum status years later.

Twain achieved global success after collaborating with producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, whom she married in 1993. Her second studio album, The Woman in Me (1995), sold over 20 million copies worldwide, spawned eight singles including "Any Man of Mine," and won a Grammy Award. Her 1997 follow-up, Come On Over, sold over 40 million copies to become the best-selling studio album by a female solo artist and the best-selling country album of all time. It spawned twelve singles, including "You're Still the One" and "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!", and won four Grammy Awards. Her fourth album, Up! (2002), also generated multiple hit singles.

After releasing a Greatest Hits album in 2004, Twain entered a hiatus after Lyme disease and dysphonia severely weakened her voice. She detailed her vocal recovery on the miniseries Why Not? with Shania Twain, released an autobiography, and launched a concert residency in Las Vegas from 2012 to 2014.

Twain returned to recording with Now (2017), which reached number one on the US Billboard 200. Her sixth studio album, Queen of Me (2023), made her the third woman to score top-ten US albums across four consecutive decades. Her seventh album, Little Miss Twain, was released in 2026.

Twain has received five Grammy Awards, two World Music Awards, and inductions into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She is the only female artist in history to hold three consecutive diamond-certified albums from the RIAA.
