Law was born on 29 December 1972 in the London borough of Lewisham to Peter Robert Law and Margaret Anne Heyworth, who were both teachers. He grew up in Blackheath, in the borough of Greenwich, alongside his older sister. He attended John Ball Primary School, Kidbrooke School, and Alleyn's School. Law developed an interest in performing during childhood and began acting with the National Youth Music Theatre in 1987. At age 17, he left school to pursue acting professionally.
Law began his career in British theater and television. One of his early notable stage performances was in Philip Ridley's The Fastest Clock in the Universe, followed by the 1994 West End production of Jean Cocteau's Les Parents terribles, which later transferred to Broadway in 1995 under the title Indiscretions. On television, Law appeared in productions such as The Tailor of Gloucester, Families, and an episode of Sherlock Holmes. His early feature film roles included the British crime drama Shopping (1994), the biopic Wilde (1997), the science fiction film Gattaca (1997), and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997).
Law achieved widespread international acclaim for his portrayal of Dickie Greenleaf in The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999). The performance earned him the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and nominations for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award. Following this breakthrough, he starred in Steven Spielberg's A.I. On television, he starred as Lenny Belardo in The Young Pope (2016) and its follow-up series The New Pope (2020), as well as Star Wars: Skeleton Crew (2024), earning a Children's and Family Emmy Award nomination for the latter.
Throughout his career, Law has maintained a prominent presence in theater. He played the title role in Hamlet in 2009 at the Donmar Warehouse, which later ran at Elsinore Castle and on Broadway, earning him a Tony Award nomination. His Broadway and West End work, including Indiscretions and Anna Christie (2011), garnered two Tony Award nominations and a Laurence Olivier Award nomination. In addition to his performance honors, Law received an Honorary César in 2007 and was named a knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in France.
In addition to acting, Law co-founded the production company Natural Nylon in 1996 before departing in 2003. He has also engaged in advocacy and humanitarian work, directing an anti-fur commercial for Respect for Animals, supporting PETA's campaign regarding seal trade restrictions, participating in pro-democracy protests for Belarus, and traveling to Afghanistan with Peace One Day and UNICEF to document peace commitments.
