Heath Ledger

Heath Andrew Ledger (4 April 1979 – 22 January 2008) was an Australian actor known for his versatility across independent and major studio films. Born in Perth, Western Australia, to Sally Ramshaw and Kim Ledger, he had English, Irish, and Scottish ancestry. Ledger attended Mary's Mount Primary School and Guildford Grammar School, where he had his first acting role starring as Peter Pan at age ten. Inspired by his sister Kate and a love of Gene Kelly, he also successfully choreographed a winning 60-member team at the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge. At age 16, he passed early graduation exams to pursue an acting career.

Ledger began his professional career in Australian television and film, appearing in productions such as Clowning Around, Sweat, Ship to Shore, Home and Away, and Blackrock. In 1998, he moved to the United States to further advance his film career. His breakthrough came as the lead in the romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), alongside a starring role in Two Hands (1999). During the early 2000s, he appeared in supporting and lead roles in films including The Patriot, Monster's Ball, A Knight's Tale, The Four Feathers, The Order, Ned Kelly, Casanova, The Brothers Grimm, and Lords of Dogtown. In 2001, he was named Male Star of Tomorrow at the ShoWest Awards.

In 2005, Ledger portrayed Wyoming ranch hand Ennis Del Mar in Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain, earning Best Actor honors from the New York Film Critics Circle and the San Francisco Film Critics Circle. He also received nominations for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA Award, and an Actor Award. He went on to star in the Australian drama Candy (2006) and portrayed a composite of Bob Dylan in Todd Haynes's I'm Not There (2007), sharing an Independent Spirit Robert Altman Award with the ensemble cast and filmmakers.

Ledger completed filming his role as the Joker in Christopher Nolan's superhero film The Dark Knight (2008) several months before his death. His performance received widespread critical acclaim and posthumous awards, including the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe Award. At the time of his death, he was filming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009); his role was subsequently completed using actors Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell to portray fantasy transformations of his character.

Beyond acting, Ledger pursued film directing and music video production through his company, The Masses. He directed videos for artists including N'fa, Ben Harper, Modest Mouse, and Grace Woodroofe, as well as a video set to Nick Drake's song Black Eyed Dog. Before his death, he was preparing his feature directorial debut, working with screenwriter Allan Scott on an adaptation of Walter Tevis's novel The Queen's Gambit.

Ledger had high-profile relationships with several figures in the entertainment industry, including Naomi Watts and Michelle Williams, with whom he had a daughter born in 2005. The couple separated in September 2007. Ledger experienced severe insomnia while preparing for intense acting roles, particularly during the filming of The Dark Knight. On 22 January 2008, Ledger died at the age of 28 from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.
