Farmiga was born on August 6, 1973, in Clifton, New Jersey, to Ukrainian parents Mykhailo and Lubomyra Farmiga. Raised in an insular Ukrainian-American community in Irvington, New Jersey, Ukrainian was her first language, and she learned English at age six. As a youth, she attended St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic School, toured with the Syzokryli folk-dancing ensemble, and trained as a pianist. After moving to Whitehouse Station at age 12, she attended Hunterdon Central Regional High School, where she discovered acting during her junior year. She went on to study theater at Syracuse University, graduating in 1995.
Farmiga began her professional stage career in 1996, performing in productions of The Tempest and Good, and making her Broadway debut understudying in Taking Sides. She transitioned to screen work with the television movie Rose Hill (1997) and a starring role in the series Roar (1997), followed by her feature film debut in Return to Paradise (1998). Her early 2000s screen credits included roles in The Opportunists (2000), 15 Minutes (2001), Dummy (2003), and the television series UC: Undercover.
Her breakthrough role came in Down to the Bone (2004), playing a drug-addicted mother, a performance that won her the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Actress. She followed this with roles in The Manchurian Candidate (2004) and Martin Scorsese's crime drama The Departed (2006). For her performance in the historical drama The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008), she won the British Independent Film Award for Best Actress. In 2009, Farmiga co-starred in the comedy-drama Up in the Air, receiving nominations for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
In 2011, Farmiga made her directorial debut with the drama film Higher Ground, in which she also played the lead role. She became widely recognized for her work in the horror genre, earning scream queen status through films such as Joshua (2007) and Orphan (2009), and portraying paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring (2013). She reprised the role of Warren in subsequent Conjuring Universe films, including The Conjuring 2 (2016), Annabelle Comes Home (2019), The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021), and The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025).
