About Bruno Ganz
Bruno Ganz (22 March 1941 – 16 February 2019) was a Swiss actor whose career across German stage, television, and film productions spanned nearly six decades. He gained widespread recognition through his work with directors such as Werner Herzog, Éric Rohmer, Francis Ford Coppola, Theo Angelopoulos, and Wim Wenders. Ganz is widely known for roles including Jonathan Zimmerman in The American Friend (1977), Jonathan Harker in Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), the angel Damiel in Wings of Desire (1987), and his portrayed role of Adolf Hitler in Downfall (2004).
Ganz was born in Zürich to a Swiss-German factory-worker father and a northern Italian mother. By the time he entered university, he had decided to pursue an acting career. Although he felt equally drawn to both the stage and screen, he initially achieved greater professional success in theatrical stage productions.
Making his theatrical debut in 1961, Ganz devoted himself primarily to the stage for almost two decades. He helped found the Berliner Schaubühne ensemble in 1970 and performed in the 1972 Salzburg Festival premiere of Der Ignorant und der Wahnsinnige under director Claus Peymann. In 1973, the magazine Theater heute named him Actor of the Year. One of his most physically demanding stage portrayals was playing Dr. Heinrich Faust in Peter Stein's 2000 production of Goethe's Faust, during which he suffered rehearsal injuries. He also served as a speaker in classical music works, including a 1993 recording with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
Ganz landed his first film role in the 1960 production The Man in the Black Derby, though his cinematic debut was not initially successful despite support from lead actor Gustav Knuth. He achieved his major film breakthrough in the 1976 movie Summerfolk. Subsequent prominent roles included co-starring with Dennis Hopper in The American Friend (1977), starring opposite Klaus Kinski in Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht (1979), and playing a professor opposite Laurence Olivier in The Boys from Brazil (1978).
In 1987, Ganz first played the angel Damiel in Wings of Desire, reprising the role in Faraway, So Close! in 1993. His performance as Adolf Hitler in Downfall (2004) followed four months of research and received widespread critical acclaim. Ganz also appeared in various English-language films, including Strapless (1989), The Last Days of Chez Nous (1992), Luther (2003), The Manchurian Candidate (2004), The Reader (2008), Unknown (2011), The Counselor (2013), and Remember (2015). His later screen portrayals included Heidi (2015), The Party (2017), and the poet Virgil in The House that Jack Built (2018).
Throughout his life, Ganz received extensive recognition. From 1996 until his death, he held the Iffland-Ring. His honors included the Hans-Reinhart-Ring, Swiss Film Prize, David di Donatello Award for Bread and Tulips, European Film Award, Order of Merit of Germany, and being named a knight of the French Légion d'honneur. Ganz was married to Sabine from 1965 until his death, and they had a son, Daniel, born in 1972. Ganz died from intestinal cancer on 16 February 2019 at his home in Au, Wädenswil, Switzerland, at the age of 77.
