Denzel Washington

Denzel Hayes Washington Jr. is an American actor and director who has earned widespread acclaim for his dramatic performances on stage and screen. Born on December 28, 1954, in Mount Vernon, New York, he was raised by his mother, Lennis, a beauty parlor owner, and his father, Denzel Hayes Washington Sr., a Pentecostal minister and city employee. After attending Oakland Military Academy and Mainland High School, Washington studied at Fordham University, where he played collegiate basketball and earned a BA in Drama and Journalism in 1977. He later trained at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco before returning to New York to begin his professional acting career.

Washington made his screen acting debut in the 1977 television film Wilma and his first Hollywood film appearance in Carbon Copy in 1981. He earned an Obie Award for the Off-Broadway production of A Soldier's Play and gained wide prominence starring as Dr. Phillip Chandler on the NBC drama series St. Elsewhere from 1982 to 1988. During this decade, he appeared in films such as A Soldier's Story and received his first Academy Award nomination for portraying political activist Stephen Biko in Cry Freedom. In 1989, he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for playing an American Civil War soldier in Glory.

Throughout the 1990s, Washington established himself as a major Hollywood star. He received an Academy Award nomination for starring in Spike Lee's historical epic Malcolm X in 1992, the same year he founded his production company, Mundy Lane Entertainment. He subsequently starred in films across various genres, including Philadelphia, The Pelican Brief, Crimson Tide, Much Ado About Nothing, Courage Under Fire, The Preacher's Wife, and He Got Game. His performance as boxer Rubin Carter in The Hurricane earned him a Golden Globe Award, a Silver Bear Award, and another Academy Award nomination.

In 2001, Washington won the Academy Award for Best Actor for playing corrupt police officer Alonzo Harris in Training Day. Following roles in films such as Remember the Titans and John Q., he made his directorial debut with Antwone Fisher in 2002. Washington went on to direct The Great Debaters, Fences, and A Journal for Jordan. His other notable film acting roles include Flight, The Equalizer trilogy, Roman J. Israel, Esq., The Tragedy of Macbeth, Gladiator II, and Highest 2 Lowest.

On stage, Washington made his Broadway debut in Checkmates in 1988 and later appeared in Broadway revivals of Julius Caesar, A Raisin in the Sun, The Iceman Cometh, and Othello. In 2010, he won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his role in August Wilson's Fences.

Washington's films have grossed over $5.1 billion worldwide. His career honors include two Academy Awards, two Golden Globes, two Silver Bears, and a Tony Award, alongside nominations for a Grammy and two Primetime Emmy Awards. In 2020, The New York Times named him the greatest actor of the 21st century. He has also received the Cecil B. DeMille Award, the AFI Life Achievement Award, the Honorary Palme d'Or, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
