Paula Patton

Paula Maxine Patton is an American film actress and producer. She gained widespread recognition through her feature film performances in high-profile projects, beginning with her screen debut in 2005. Over her career, she has taken on prominent starring and supporting roles across major cinematic releases, including science fiction thrillers, action blockbusters, and critically recognized dramatic works.

Born on December 5, 1975, in Los Angeles, California, Patton was raised by her mother, a school teacher of German and Dutch ancestry, and her father, a lawyer of African-American descent. She attended Alexander Hamilton High School before entering the University of California, Berkeley. After her freshman year, she transferred to the University of Southern California's Film School. Upon completing her studies, she secured a three-month post creating documentaries for PBS.

Patton initially engaged with the entertainment business through music. In 2004, she provided female vocals for Usher's album Confessions on the song "Can U Handle It?" She also co-wrote songs for musician Robin Thicke under the pseudonyms "Max" and "Max Haddington." Her cinematic acting debut came in 2005 with a small part in the romantic comedy Hitch, followed by an appearance in the drama London. In 2006, she performed alongside OutKast members in the musical feature Idlewild.

Her major career breakthrough occurred in 2006 when she starred as Claire Kuchever opposite Denzel Washington in the science fiction thriller Déjà Vu, which grossed over $180 million worldwide. She went on to portray a television reporter in Swing Vote and a lead character's wife in the horror film Mirrors in 2008. In 2009, Patton received attention for her portrayal of Ms. Blu Rain, an encouraging alternative high school teacher, in the drama Precious. She followed this with a supporting role in the 2010 romantic comedy Just Wright.

Patton secured another massive commercial hit with the 2011 blockbuster Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, which grossed nearly $700 million globally. That same year, she played the lead in the comedy Jumping the Broom. She later co-starred in the 2013 action comedy 2 Guns, took the primary role in Baggage Claim, and starred in 2016 projects including The Perfect Match, The Do-Over, and the fantasy film Warcraft as Garona Halforcen.

On television, Patton appeared in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, filmed an unreleased pilot titled Runner, and held the lead role in the 2017 series Somewhere Between. She also starred in the 2019 feature Sacrifice and was cast in the indie musical Reimagined. In her personal life, Patton married musician Robin Thicke in 2005 after first meeting him in 1991. The couple welcomed a son in 2010 before separating in 2014, with their divorce finalized in 2015 after subsequent legal agreements concerning custody.
