John Legend

John Roger Stephens, known professionally as John Legend, is an American singer, songwriter, pianist, and record producer born on December 28, 1978. He began his musical career working behind the scenes for artists including Lauryn Hill, Jay-Z, and Alicia Keys. Legend was the first artist signed to Kanye West's GOOD Music label and broke through with his 2004 debut album, Get Lifted. Over his career, he has achieved major commercial success across music, film, television, and theater.

Legend was born in Springfield, Ohio, to a seamstress mother who directed the church choir and a factory worker father who played drums. Homeschooled initially, he began playing piano at age four and performing in church at seven. After skipping two grades, he graduated salutatorian from North High School at age 12. At 16, he enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania, leading an a cappella group and earning a bachelor's degree in English magna cum laude in 1999.

Following graduation, Legend worked at the Boston Consulting Group while releasing independent music. Introduced to Kanye West in 2001, he contributed to West's tracks and adopted the stage name John Legend. His debut studio album, Get Lifted (2004), reached the top ten of the Billboard 200 and was certified double platinum by the RIAA. Driven by the hit single "Ordinary People," the album earned Legend three Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist.

Legend's second album, Once Again (2006), included the Grammy-winning song "Heaven" and the single "Save Room." His third album, Evolver (2008), featured the top-30 single "Green Light" with André 3000. He later released a live album in 2008 and collaborated with the Roots on Wake Up! (2010), which earned three Grammy Awards. In 2013, he released Love in the Future, featuring the Billboard Hot 100 number-one, RIAA diamond-certified single "All of Me."

After releasing Darkness and Light (2016), Legend parted ways with GOOD Music. His later music releases include A Legendary Christmas (2018), Bigger Love (2020)—which won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album—and his ninth album, Legend (2022). He also collaborated with Meghan Trainor on the 2015 hit single "Like I'm Gonna Lose You."

Legend has won 12 Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award for the single "Glory" from the film Selma. He earned a Tony Award for co-producing the stage play Jitney (2017) and an Emmy Award as a producer of NBC's Jesus Christ Superstar (2018), becoming the first Black male to achieve EGOT status. Legend has also served as a coach on The Voice since 2019 and became Chief Music Officer for Headspace in 2025.
