Over his career, he has appeared in feature films such as 2 Fast 2 Furious, Takers, Think Like a Man, About Last Night, The Intruder, and Fatale, alongside recurring and lead roles in television series.

Ealy was born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland. His mother was employed by IBM, and his father worked in the grocery business. Ealy attended Springbrook High School and later graduated from the University of Maryland in College Park in 1996 with a degree in English.

His acting career began in the late 1990s through various off-Broadway stage productions. Early film credits included Bad Company and Kissing Jessica Stein. His breakthrough came in 2002 with Barbershop, a role he reprised in the 2004 sequel Barbershop 2: Back in Business. During this period, Ealy also appeared as Slap Jack in 2 Fast 2 Furious and co-starred in Never Die Alone.

In 2005, Ealy appeared in the television film adaptation of Their Eyes Were Watching God and the independent drama Jellysmoke. He gained critical acclaim for starring in the Showtime series Sleeper Cell, earning a Golden Globe Award nomination in December 2006 for his performance in its second season. He also featured in prominent music videos, including Mariah Carey's "Get Your Number" and Beyoncé's "Halo."

Ealy continued to build his profile with roles in the film Seven Pounds, the series FlashForward, and the documentary feature The People Speak. In 2010, he played attorney Derrick Bond in The Good Wife and co-starred in the action film Takers. He went on to star in the television series Common Law and featured in the ensemble romantic comedies Think Like a Man and Think Like a Man Too.

From 2013 to 2014, Ealy co-starred as an android in the futuristic police series Almost Human. His television credits expanded with roles in The Following, Secrets and Lies, Being Mary Jane, and Stumptown, as well as appearances in Bel-Air and Power Book II: Ghost. On the big screen, he took on leading roles in thrillers including Jacob's Ladder, The Intruder, and Fatale.

In October 2012, Ealy married entrepreneur Khatira Rafiqzada in Los Angeles, and the couple has a son and a daughter. A fan of the Washington Commanders, Ealy is also a Democrat who publicly endorsed candidates including Angela Alsobrooks, Kamala Harris, and Tim Walz during the 2024 elections.
