J. Smith-Cameron

J. Smith-Cameron is an American actress known for her extensive career across theater, film, and television. She achieved broad recognition for her television performances as Janet Talbot in the series Rectify and as lawyer Gerri Kellman in the drama series Succession. Her performance in the latter earned her two Primetime Emmy Award nominations.

Born Jeannie Smith in Louisville, Kentucky, she is the daughter and granddaughter of architects named Richard Sharp Smith. She attended Florida State University's School of Theatre for one year, during which filmmaker Victor Nuñez cast her as the lead in Gal Young 'Un (1979). She subsequently studied acting at HB Studio in New York City. To avoid a name she considered too youthful, she began using J. Smith during college, later adding Cameron to satisfy Actors' Equity Association requirements regarding unique stage names.

Smith-Cameron built a significant portion of her early career in the theater. She made her Broadway debut in 1982 replacing Mia Dillon in Crimes of the Heart. In 1989, she appeared in the original Broadway cast of Lend Me a Tenor, sharing an Outer Critics Circle Special Award with her castmates. Her performance in the 1991 Broadway production of Our Country's Good brought her a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play.

Throughout her stage career, Smith-Cameron performed frequently in Off-Broadway venues such as the Public Theater, Playwrights Horizons, and Second Stage Theatre. She won an Obie Award and earned Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations for her role in As Bees in Honey Drown (1997). Her work in productions like The Naked Truth, Fuddy Meers, Sarah, Sarah, and Juno and the Paycock also earned Drama Desk or Outer Critics Circle nominations. Her other Broadway credits include Night Must Fall, Tartuffe, and After the Night and the Music, alongside Off-Broadway work in her husband's play The Starry Messenger.

She later expanded her work in film and television to spend more time with her family. Her feature film appearances include 84 Charing Cross Road, Mighty Aphrodite, Sabrina, In & Out, You Can Count on Me, Margaret, and Christine. Her performance in the 2018 film Nancy earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Female. On television, she played seven distinct characters across the Law & Order franchise and appeared in series such as True Blood, Divorce, Search Party, and Fleishman Is in Trouble.

Smith-Cameron spent four seasons portraying the mother of a death row inmate on Rectify before starring as Gerri Kellman on Succession from 2018 to 2023. She continued her theatrical work with a limited run of Love Letters in 2023 and made her West End debut in a 2024 revival of Juno and the Paycock alongside Mark Rylance.

Smith-Cameron is married to playwright, screenwriter, and film director Kenneth Lonergan, with whom she has one daughter.
