Nestor Carbonell

Néstor Gastón Carbonell is an American actor, director, and screenwriter. He earned wide recognition for portraying Luis Rivera on the television comedy Suddenly Susan, as well as for his performances as Richard Alpert in the drama series Lost, Sheriff Alex Romero in Bates Motel, and Yanko Flores in The Morning Show. On the big screen, he portrayed Mayor Anthony Garcia in the superhero films The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. In 2024, he won a Primetime Emmy Award for his guest role in the drama series Shōgun.

Carbonell was born in New York City on December 1, 1967, to Cuban parents of Spanish descent. Because of his father's employment with PepsiCo, his family spent parts of his childhood living in London, Mexico City, Caracas, and the Bahamas. While residing in Venezuela, he attended The British School in Caracas, later transferring to Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts after returning to the United States. He subsequently graduated from Harvard University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.

Carbonell began his professional acting career with a television guest appearance on As the World Turns, followed by roles in shows such as Law & Order and Melrose Place. In 1995, he appeared in the Stephen Sondheim and George Furth play Getting Away with Murder and joined the main cast of the sitcom Muscle. His breakthrough came shortly after when he was cast as a regular on Suddenly Susan, appearing on the series from 1996 through 2000. In 2000, he made his feature screenwriting debut with the comedy Attention Shoppers, in which he also starred.

In 2007, Carbonell joined the cast of Lost during its third season as the character Richard Alpert, eventually becoming a main cast member for its final season. During this era, he also held a starring role in the series Cane and portrayed Mayor Anthony Garcia in Christopher Nolan's feature films The Dark Knight and its 2012 sequel, The Dark Knight Rises. Carbonell further expanded his television credits with recurring and guest roles on series including Psych, Ringer, Wilfred, Person of Interest, and The Good Wife.

From 2013 to 2017, Carbonell portrayed Sheriff Alex Romero on the thriller series Bates Motel, moving from a recurring capacity to the main cast while also directing three episodes. He later directed an episode of the drama series The Good Doctor in 2017. In 2024, his performance as Rodrigues on the FX series Shōgun earned him the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. Off screen, Carbonell married actress Shannon Kenny in 2001, and the couple has two sons.
