Reese Witherspoon

Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon is an American actress and producer. Known for her work in film and television, she is the recipient of numerous accolades, including an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and two Golden Globe Awards. In addition to her acting career, she has expanded into production and commercial business, founding the media brand Hello Sunshine, Reese's Book Club, and the clothing company Draper James.

Witherspoon was born on March 22, 1976, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her father worked as a lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve and practiced as an otolaryngologist, while her mother held a PhD in pediatric nursing and taught at Vanderbilt University. Raised in an Episcopalian household in Nashville, Tennessee, Witherspoon attended Harding Academy and graduated from Harpeth Hall School. After modeling for television advertisements as a child and winning a talent fair, she briefly studied English literature at Stanford University before leaving to pursue her acting career.

She made her feature film debut in the 1991 drama The Man in the Moon, followed by roles in television films and features such as Wildflower, A Far Off Place, and Jack the Bear. In 1996, Witherspoon starred in the thrillers Fear and Freeway, earning the Best Actress Award at the Cognac Police Film Festival for her performance in the latter. Her breakthrough arrived in 1999 with roles in the drama Cruel Intentions and the black comedy Election, where her portrayal of Tracy Flick earned critical acclaim and her first Golden Globe nomination.

In 2001, Witherspoon achieved wider recognition playing Elle Woods in the comedy Legally Blonde, a role she reprised in the 2003 sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde. During this period, she also starred in the romantic comedy Sweet Home Alabama (2002) and the feature adaptation Vanity Fair (2004). Witherspoon attained major critical success portraying June Carter Cash in the 2005 musical biopic Walk the Line, winning the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Following a career downturn, during which she starred in the romantic drama Water for Elephants (2011), Witherspoon produced and starred as Cheryl Strayed in the 2014 drama Wild, earning a second Academy Award nomination. She subsequently focused on female-led television projects under her company Hello Sunshine, producing and starring in series such as Big Little Lies—which won her a Primetime Emmy Award—The Morning Show, and Little Fires Everywhere. She has also produced film adaptations including Gone Girl and Where the Crawdads Sing, as well as the miniseries Daisy Jones & the Six.

Beyond production and acting, Witherspoon actively participates in advocacy organizations. She serves on the board of the Children's Defense Fund and was named Global Ambassador for Avon Products in 2007, serving as honorary chair of the Avon Foundation.
