Mark Duplass

Mark David Duplass is an American actor, filmmaker, and musician. He is widely recognized for his creative work both in front of and behind the camera, frequently collaborating with his brother Jay Duplass. Together, the siblings founded the production company Duplass Brothers Productions and established a distinct independent filmmaking style characterized by heavy reliance on actor improvisation, numerous camera takes, and extensive scene editing.

Duplass was born on December 7, 1976, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Cynthia and Lawrence Duplass. Raised in a Catholic household, his family heritage includes Italian, German, French Cajun, and Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry. He completed his secondary education at Jesuit High School before pursuing higher studies at the University of Texas at Austin and the City College of New York.

In 1996, Duplass partnered with his brother to establish Duplass Brothers Productions. The duo co-wrote and produced their early feature film, The Puffy Chair, in 2005, in which Mark also portrayed a lead character. They continued their directorial and writing partnership with feature projects such as Baghead in 2008 and Cyrus in 2010. They followed these with the 2012 releases Jeff, Who Lives at Home and The Do-Deca-Pentathlon. Expanding into television, the brothers created the HBO series Togetherness, which ran from 2015 to 2016, and later produced Room 104 from 2017 to 2020. Their production company signed a two-year overall deal with HBO in 2015.

As an actor, Duplass featured in films such as Humpday, Greenberg, Safety Not Guaranteed, and The One I Love. In 2009, he joined the main cast of the FX comedy series The League, appearing on the show through 2015. He co-starred alongside Olivia Wilde and Evan Peters in the 2015 thriller film The Lazarus Effect. His subsequent film credits include Blue Jay, Tully, Duck Butter, and the 2019 comedy Paddleton, which he also co-wrote and executive produced. Additional screen projects include Language Lessons and Backrooms.

Duplass expanded into the horror genre by co-writing, producing, and starring as the character Josef in Creep in 2014 alongside Patrick Brice. He reprised his role and co-writing duties for the 2017 sequel, Creep 2, as well as the 2024 television spin-off series, The Creep Tapes. On television, he portrayed real estate developer Tom Wyatt in the second season of Goliath between 2018 and 2019. Beginning in 2019, he began playing Charlie "Chip" Black on the drama series The Morning Show, a role that earned him two nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

Outside of film and television production, Duplass performed as the lead singer for the indie rock band Volcano, I'm Still Excited!! In 2018, he co-authored the autobiographical book Like Brothers with Jay Duplass. In July 2022, he was selected as the Frank Sinatra Artist-in-Residence at Santa Clara University for the 2022–2023 academic period. Duplass is married to Katie Aselton, who co-starred with him in both The Puffy Chair and The League. The couple has two daughters, Ora, born in 2007, and Molly, born in 2012.
