She attended Georgetown Day School and Phillips Academy, graduating in 2002, and later studied acting at the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin. Raised in a family of prominent writers and journalists, she adopted her stage name in high school to honor Irish author Oscar Wilde and later legally changed her surname. She holds dual citizenship in the United States and Ireland.
Wilde began her screen acting career with television roles in Skin and The O.C., alongside early film appearances in The Girl Next Door and Alpha Dog. In 2007, she starred off-Broadway in the political thriller Beauty on the Vine and joined the cast of the medical drama series House as Dr. Remy "Thirteen" Hadley. Her performance on the series brought her wide public visibility. She remained a regular cast member on House until leaving in 2011 to pursue film projects, later returning for the show's series finale in 2012.
Following her breakthrough television work, Wilde starred in feature films across several genres, including Tron: Legacy, Cowboys & Aliens, The Change-Up, Rush, Her, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, and The Lazarus Effect. She also produced and starred in the drama Meadowland. In 2016, she starred in the television series Vinyl and directed music videos for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The following year, she made her Broadway acting debut as Julia in a production of 1984 at the Hudson Theatre.
Wilde made her feature directorial debut with the 2019 teen comedy Booksmart, which earned critical acclaim and won the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature. She went on to direct and star in the psychological thriller Don't Worry Darling as well as the comedy film The Invite. Her other notable acting credits include Richard Jewell, A Vigilante, I Want Your Sex, and voice work as Lois Lane in the animated film DC League of Super-Pets.
In addition to narrative filmmaking, Wilde has executive produced several documentary shorts, such as Sun City Picture House, Baseball in the Time of Cholera, and Body Team 12, the latter of which won Best Documentary Short at the Tribeca Film Festival and received an Academy Award nomination. In late 2023, she co-founded Proximity Ventures, a New York City-based venture capital firm. She has served as a brand ambassador for Revlon, H&M, and True Botanicals, and has served on the boards of Artists for Peace and Justice and the ACLU of Southern California.
Wilde married Italian filmmaker and musician Don Tao dei Principi Ruspoli in Washington, Virginia, on June 7, 2003, when she was 19 years old.
