Laurence Fishburne

Laurence John Fishburne III is an American actor widely recognized for playing authoritative and militant characters across film, television, and theatre. He earned widespread fame through his roles as Morpheus in The Matrix trilogy and the Bowery King in the John Wick film franchise. Throughout his career, he has garnered critical acclaim for his performances in both dramatic motion pictures and major television productions.

Born in Augusta, Georgia, Fishburne was raised in Brooklyn, New York, by his mother, a middle school teacher, following his parents' divorce. He attended and graduated from Lincoln Square Academy in New York. Later in life, he discovered that his biological father was a military member named William Seigel Bohannan, who had met his mother while she volunteered for the USO.

Fishburne began acting as a child under the name Larry Fishburne, landing early television roles on an ABC Theater teleplay and the soap opera One Life to Live. He made a prominent early screen appearance in the movie Cornbread, Earl and Me before securing a supporting role as a young soldier in Apocalypse Now, a project he joined at age fourteen. During the 1980s, he built his resume with stage productions such as Short Eyes and Loose Ends, while also appearing in films like The Color Purple, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, and School Daze, alongside a recurring television role on Pee-wee's Playhouse.

The 1990s marked a major turning point in Fishburne's career. After starring in Boyz n the Hood and Deep Cover, he earned a Tony Award for his Broadway performance in Two Trains Running and an Emmy Award for the series TriBeCa. In 1993, his portrayal of Ike Turner in What's Love Got to Do with It earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He went on to star as the title character in Othello, write and direct the Off-Broadway play Riff-Raff, and star in the science fiction film Event Horizon before achieving global stardom in 1999's The Matrix.

In subsequent years, Fishburne expanded his film credits with roles in Mission: Impossible III, Mystic River, Contagion, and superhero films including Man of Steel and Ant-Man and the Wasp. His television work remained extensive, featuring starring roles on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Hannibal, and the sitcom Black-ish, where he also served as an executive producer. Additionally, he earned accolades for his Broadway performance in Thurgood, served as a UNICEF ambassador, narrated an audiobook of The Autobiography of Malcolm X, and joined projects such as The Witcher and The Amateur.

Fishburne has been married twice, first to Hajna O. Moss, with whom he has two children, and later to actress Gina Torres, with whom he shares one daughter; both marriages ended in divorce. He maintains residences in Hollywood and New York City.
