He portrayed Fox Crane on Passions, Oliver Queen on Smallville, Adam Newman on The Young and the Restless, and Kevin Pearson on This Is Us. He has also starred in feature films including A Bad Moms Christmas and The Noel Diary, and stars in the action drama series Tracker.
Hartley was born in Knoxville, Illinois, and raised in the Chicago suburb of Orland Park alongside his brother, Nathan, and sisters, Megan and Gabriela. After graduating from Carl Sandburg High School, he attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale and the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he majored in history and theater.
Hartley began his television career playing Fox Crane on the NBC soap opera Passions from 2002 to 2006. In 2006, he starred in the CW pilot Aquaman, which was not picked up as a series. That same year, he landed a role as Oliver Queen on Smallville, joining as a regular cast member in 2008. While on Smallville, he co-wrote the 2010 episode "Sacrifice" and directed the 2011 episode "Dominion." He also appeared in the 2008 film Red Canyon.
Following Smallville, Hartley starred in the series Emily Owens, M.D. and guest-starred on Chuck, Castle, and Hart of Dixie. From 2013 to 2014, he had a recurring role as Patrick Osbourne on Revenge, followed by a recurring role on Mistresses as plastic surgeon Scott Trosman. From 2014 to 2016, Hartley portrayed Adam Newman on the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless, earning a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for his performance.
Hartley achieved wider attention starring as Kevin Pearson in the NBC drama series This Is Us from 2016 to 2022. For his work on the series, he earned three Critics' Choice Television Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and won a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the ensemble cast. His film work includes A Bad Moms Christmas, The Hunt, and The Noel Diary, which he executive produced. In 2024, he began starring in and executive producing the CBS series Tracker.
Hartley was married to his Passions co-star Lindsay Korman from 2004 to 2012, and the two share joint custody of their daughter, Isabella Justice. He was married to actress Chrishell Stause from 2017 until their divorce was finalized in 2021. In March 2021, Hartley married his former The Young and the Restless co-star Sofia Pernas.
