Denise Quiñones

Denise Marie Quiñones August is a Puerto Rican actress, model, and beauty queen who gained international prominence after winning Miss Universe 2001. Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, on September 9, 1980, she initially represented her hometown of Lares in the Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2001 competition before advancing to compete internationally.

Quiñones won the Miss Universe title in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, during the pageant's 50th anniversary event in 2001, where she was crowned by outgoing titleholder Lara Dutta of India. During the competition, she earned the awards for Miss Photogenic, Bluepoint Swimsuit, and Clairol Best Style. She became only the fourth Miss Universe winner to also receive the Miss Photogenic award, following Margareta Arvidsson, Margarita Moran, and Janelle Commissiong. Quiñones was also the first titleholder to wear the Mikimoto Crown during its official press presentation by Mikimoto's former brand director, Mr. Toyohiko Miyamoto.

Following her win, Quiñones resided in New York City for a year, receiving benefits provided to pageant winners, including professional representation by the Miss Universe Organization, a full wardrobe, complimentary makeup and haircare, a vehicle, travel opportunities, and a $60,000 scholarship to a New York City film school. On the night of the Miss Universe 2002 pageant in San Juan, Puerto Rico, she passed her crown to Oxana Fedorova of Russia.

After completing her reign, Quiñones studied acting through the School for Film and Television's two-year conservatory program. She subsequently began a career as an actress, starring in the Spanish version of Nilo Cruz's play Ana en el trópico (Anna in the Tropics). For her performance in the production, she earned an HOLA Award from the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors and an ACE Award. In October 2005, she played the title role of Doña Rosita in a production of Federico García Lorca's play Doña Rosita la soltera.

Quiñones expanded into television and off-Broadway theater in the United States. She guest-starred in a season five episode of the WB Network series Smallville as Andrea, a masked crime fighter alongside Clark Kent (played by Tom Welling). She was also cast as a young fighter pilot named Rachel in the pilot for the series Aquaman, which was developed for the CW Television Network but was not picked up for the fall 2006 lineup. In November 2006, she starred off-Broadway in Antonio Zancada's Spanish comedy Zanahorias (Carrots), winning an ACE Award for her role in 2007. In July 2008, she was announced for the role of Lara in the film I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell, but producer Tucker Max later confirmed she dropped out due to a scheduling conflict.

In February 2014, Quiñones joined the eighth season of Univision's beauty pageant reality show Nuestra Belleza Latina 2014 as a team mentor to coach contestants on modeling techniques. On February 15, 2018, she was named pageant director for Miss Universe Puerto Rico, taking over from Desiree Lowry. She prepared several successful delegates for the international pageant, including Kiara Ortega (Top 5 in 2018), Madison Anderson (1st Runner-Up in 2019), and Estefanía Soto (Top 10 in 2020), before stepping down in 2021 when Yizette Cifredo was named her successor.

In her personal life, Quiñones dated rapper René Pérez of the group Calle 13 from 2006 to 2009. She was later in a relationship with Dominican actor Frank Perozo from 2010 to 2011.
