Kenny Johnson

Kenny Johnson, born July 13, 1963, is an American actor and former model. He is widely recognized for his work across numerous television series, including his roles as Detective Curtis Lemansky in The Shield, Butch "Burner" Barnes in Pensacola: Wings of Gold, Detective Ham Dewey in Saving Grace, Herman Kozik in Sons of Anarchy, Matt Webb in Prime Suspect, Caleb Calhoun in Bates Motel, Dominique Luca in S.W.A.T., and Tommy Welch on Chicago Fire.

Johnson was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and was raised on a 30-acre farm in Weathersfield, Vermont. He attended Central Connecticut State University, where he played both football and basketball. Prior to entering the acting industry, Johnson spent approximately four years modeling for agencies such as Wilhelmina and Ford Models. This work led him to live in Boston, Massachusetts, for a year before moving to Los Angeles, California, where he ultimately launched his acting career.

His career began with television commercials, including an early advertisement for LA Gear. A former champion arm wrestler, Johnson initially made minor appearances on a wide range of television programs, such as Family Matters, Grace Under Fire, Caroline in the City, Sliders, 18 Wheels of Justice, Just Shoot Me!, NCIS: Los Angeles, Lie to Me, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and The Protector. Early film appearances included a bit role in Blade (1998), the 2005 thriller Zzyzx, and the 2006 Hallmark Channel movie Desolation Canyon.

Johnson achieved a major career turn when he auditioned for The Shield. Although he initially read for the role of Terry Crowley, casting directors re-auditioned him for Curtis Lemansky. His performance earned him the part, and the character quickly became a prominent figure in the first season due to Johnson's chemistry with his co-stars. Following The Shield, he secured recurring roles in Cold Case, joined the cast of Saving Grace, played sergeant-at-arms Herman Kozik in Sons of Anarchy, and directed and starred in the short film I Heard the Mermaids Singing.

Throughout the 2010s, Johnson continued working extensively in television and film. He starred as a series regular on NBC's Prime Suspect, portrayed convicted drug smuggler Frank Connor in the 2011 film Few Options, and took on guest or recurring roles in Burn Notice, The Mentalist, Dexter, and Covert Affairs. On Bates Motel, he played Caleb Calhoun as a recurring and later main cast member across multiple seasons. His other projects during this period included the 2015 thriller film Solace and a main role in the second season of Secrets and Lies.

From 2017 to 2024, Johnson starred as main character Officer Dominique Luca in the CBS drama series S.W.A.T. In his personal life, he married Cathleen Oveson in December 2005, and the couple has a daughter, Angelica Scarlet, who later had a recurring role alongside him on S.W.A.T. Johnson has publicly spoken out to raise awareness about dyslexia, a condition he has. In 2018, he sustained injuries while performing a helicopter stunt on the set of S.W.A.T., leading to a legal dispute with production company Sony that was settled in 2023.
