Colin Farrell

Colin James Farrell is an Irish actor born on 31 May 1976. A prominent performer in both major blockbusters and independent films, he has earned numerous accolades throughout his career. His recognitions include three Golden Globe Awards, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Volpi Cup, alongside nominations for an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, and two Primetime Emmy Awards.

Farrell was raised Catholic in Castleknock, a suburb of Dublin, by his parents Rita and Eamon Farrell. His father played football for Shamrock Rovers FC and managed Farrell's youth team, Castleknock Celtic FC. Farrell attended St Brigid's National School, Castleknock College, and Gormanston College. Inspired to pursue acting after watching E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, he briefly attended the Gaiety School of Acting before dropping out upon landing a television role. During his youth, he also auditioned unsuccessfully for the boy band Boyzone.

Farrell began his screen career in television with roles in the BBC drama series Ballykissangel and Falling for a Dancer. He made his credited feature film debut in the 1999 drama The War Zone, followed by an appearance in Ordinary Decent Criminal. In 2000, he secured his first lead film role as Private Roland Bozz in the war drama Tigerland. After appearing in American Outlaws and Hart's War, he achieved his mainstream breakthrough starring in Steven Spielberg's 2002 science fiction film Minority Report.

Following his breakthrough, Farrell starred in several commercial hits, including the thrillers Phone Booth, The Recruit, and S.W.A.T. He played the villain Bullseye in the superhero film Daredevil and took on the title role in Oliver Stone's historical epic Alexander. During this period, he also appeared in the independent features Intermission and A Home at the End of the World, the historical drama The New World, the romance Ask the Dust, and Michael Mann's action crime drama Miami Vice.

Farrell earned critical acclaim for playing a novice hitman in Martin McDonagh's dark comedy In Bruges (2008), winning his first Golden Globe Award. His subsequent film projects included Cassandra's Dream, Pride and Glory, Triage, and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, as well as narrating the documentary Kicking It. He expanded his filmography with roles in Horrible Bosses, Total Recall, Seven Psychopaths, Saving Mr. Banks, The Lobster, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Dumbo, in addition to starring in the second season of HBO's True Detective.

In 2022, Farrell received further acclaim for his performances in After Yang, Thirteen Lives, and McDonagh's drama The Banshees of Inisherin. For the latter, he won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor and his second Golden Globe Award, while receiving nominations for an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award. That same year, he portrayed Oz Cobb / Penguin in the superhero film The Batman, later reprising the role in the 2024 HBO miniseries The Penguin, which earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.
