Her film work also includes Denis Villeneuve's thriller Enemy, the period drama Belle, and Dracula Untold. On television, she is best known for starring in the miniseries Alias Grace and 11.22.63.

Raised by a psychologist father and teacher mother alongside an older brother, Gadon has British and Italian ancestry. She spent much of her youth training as a dancer at The National Ballet School of Canada, Claude Watson School for the Performing Arts, and Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts. She graduated from Vaughan Road Academy as an Ontario Scholar in 2005 and completed studies at the University of Toronto's Cinema Studies Institute by 2014.

Gadon began acting at age 11 on La Femme Nikita in 1998. She went on to take episodic roles in series such as Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Mutant X, Dark Oracle, and Flashpoint. She had recurring roles in The Border, Being Erica, Happy Town, and Murdoch Mysteries, and worked as a voice actress for animated series including Ruby Gloom, Total Drama, and Friends and Heroes. Her early movie work included TV films like The Other Me and features such as Fast Food High and Charlie Bartlett.

Her film breakthrough included roles in David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis and A Dangerous Method, as well as Brandon Cronenberg's Antiviral and the miniseries World Without End. In 2014, she starred in Denis Villeneuve's Enemy, David Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars, and the action film Dracula Untold. She played Princess Elizabeth in the 2015 comedy A Royal Night Out, followed by roles in the period film Indignation and the thriller The 9th Life of Louis Drax in 2016.

In 2016, Gadon starred as Sadie Dunhill in 11.22.63, followed by her lead role as Grace Marks in the 2017 miniseries Alias Grace. She joined the sitcom Letterkenny in its third season and starred in the period drama The Great Darkened Days. Her subsequent roles included the third season of True Detective in 2019, the film American Woman, and the 2021 drama All My Puny Sorrows.

Gadon made her directorial debut with an episode of the documentary series Reelside in 2015 and signed in 2022 to direct a feature adaptation of Lullabies for Little Criminals. Over her career, she has won three Canadian Screen Awards for Alias Grace, Enemy, and The Great Darkened Days, along with the 2016 ACTRA Award of Excellence and a Vancouver Film Critics Circle Award. In her personal life, she married Max Fine in September 2022 and revealed a pregnancy in December 2023.
