Born on October 18, 1992, Keoghan was raised in the Summerhill neighborhood of Dublin, Ireland. After his mother passed away due to addiction when he was twelve years old, he and his brother spent seven years in foster care across thirteen different homes before being brought up by their grandmother, aunt, and older cousin. He participated in school plays as a child but was removed for misbehavior. Following his debut on screen, he trained at The Factory, a local acting school in Dublin.
Keoghan began his professional career in 2010 after responding to a casting notice displayed in a shop window for the film Between the Canals. He went on to appear in the soap opera Fair City and secured wider domestic attention portraying Wayne in the crime drama series Love/Hate. His international breakthrough occurred in 2017 with supporting roles in Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk and Yorgos Lanthimos's The Killing of a Sacred Deer, winning an Irish Film and Television Award for the latter. He subsequently appeared in the historical drama Black '47 and the heist film American Animals.
His career continued to expand with roles in the HBO miniseries Chernobyl, the crime film Calm with Horses, and the fantasy film The Green Knight. In 2021, he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Druig in Eternals, followed by a cameo appearance as the Joker in the 2022 film The Batman. That same year, Keoghan received a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and an Academy Award nomination for his performance in Martin McDonagh's drama The Banshees of Inisherin.
Keoghan starred as Oliver Quick in the 2023 psychological thriller Saltburn, receiving a Golden Globe nomination. His recent television projects include the final season of Top Boy and the miniseries Masters of the Air, followed by a role in the feature film Bird. He was also cast to portray Ringo Starr in a quadrology of Beatles biographical films directed by Sam Mendes. Outside of acting, he has served as a brand ambassador for luxury houses Dior and Burberry, as well as an ambassador for the Barretstown children's charity.
In his personal life, Keoghan is an amateur boxer, a Manchester United supporter, and has spoken publicly about having ADHD. He has a son born in 2022 from his former relationship with Alyson Kierans.
