Alicia Vikander

Alicia Amanda Vikander is a Swedish actress known for her work across international film and television productions. Her accolades include an Academy Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and nominations for three British Academy Film Awards and two Golden Globe Awards. In 2016, she was named to Forbes' 30 Under 30 list.

Vikander was born on October 3, 1988, in Gothenburg, Sweden, to stage actress Maria Fahl and psychiatrist Svante Vikander. Raised primarily by her mother following her parents' separation, she began performing on stage at age seven at The Göteborg Opera. She trained in ballet from age nine at the Svenska Balettskolan i Göteborg, moving to Stockholm at fifteen to attend the Royal Swedish Ballet's upper school. After dance injuries sidelined her ballet career, she turned her focus fully to acting.

She began her screen career in Swedish short films and television, gaining initial recognition in the drama series Andra Avenyn from 2008 to 2010. Vikander made her feature film debut in Pure (2010), winning the Guldbagge Award for Best Actress. She gained international attention in 2012 by playing Kitty in Anna Karenina and Queen Caroline Mathilde in the Danish film A Royal Affair. Her subsequent projects included roles in The Crown Jewels (2011), The Fifth Estate (2013), Hotell (2013), and Son of a Gun (2014).

Vikander achieved global acclaim for her 2014 and 2015 performances. She starred as Vera Brittain in Testament of Youth (2014) and as the humanoid robot Ava in Ex Machina (2014), earning a BAFTA nomination. For her portrayal of painter Gerda Wegener in The Danish Girl (2015), she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, the Screen Actors Guild Award, and the Critics' Choice Movie Award. During this period, she also appeared in Seventh Son, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Burnt, and narrated the documentary Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words.

In 2016, Vikander launched the production company Vikarious with her agent Charles Collier, going on to produce and star in Euphoria (2017). Her notable film roles during this time included Jason Bourne (2016), The Light Between Oceans (2016), and the action film Tomb Raider (2018), in which she played Lara Croft. She subsequently appeared in the short film I Am Easy to Find (2019) and the thriller Earthquake Bird (2019).

Her later projects include portraying a young Gloria Steinem in The Glorias (2020), along with roles in The Green Knight (2021), Beckett (2021), Blue Bayou (2021), the miniseries Irma Vep (2022), Firebrand (2023), Rumours (2024), and The Wizard of the Kremlin. Off screen, Vikander identifies as a feminist, advocates for gender equality in cinema, and signed an open letter against sexual misconduct in 2017. She married actor Michael Fassbender in 2017, has two sons, and holds both Swedish and UK citizenship.
