Vicky Krieps

Vicky Krieps is a Luxembourgish and German actress who has featured in international film and television productions across Europe and the United States. She gained global attention for her breakthrough role starring opposite Daniel Day-Lewis in Paul Thomas Anderson's 2017 period drama film Phantom Thread.

Born on 4 October 1983 in Hesperange, Luxembourg, Krieps grew up with a German mother and a Luxembourgish father, Bob Krieps, who managed a film distribution business before becoming director general of the Ministry of Culture. Her paternal grandfather, Robert Krieps, was a politician, Resistance member, and government minister. Krieps gained early drama experience at the Lycée de Garçons and the Conservatoire de Luxembourg. After volunteering with a primary school social project in South Africa, she committed to an acting career, studying at the Zurich University of the Arts while performing at the Schauspielhaus Zürich.

Krieps initially appeared in local Luxembourgish television projects and films before taking on roles in international features such as Hanna (2011), Anonymous (2011), Two Lives (2012), Before the Winter Chill (2013), and A Most Wanted Man (2014), alongside television projects like Elly Beinhorn: Solo Flight and the drama series Das Boot. Following her breakout in Phantom Thread, her career expanded with parts in major releases including The Girl in the Spider's Web (2018) and The Last Vermeer (2019).

In 2021, Krieps starred in several high-profile films, including M. Night Shyamalan's horror feature Old, the drama Bergman Island, the HBO film The Survivor, the Netflix feature Beckett, and Mathieu Amalric's Hold Me Tight, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival. The following year, she served as an executive producer and starred as Empress Elisabeth of Austria in the historical feature Corsage. Premiering in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, her performance won the Un Certain Regard Best Performance Prize and earned her the European Film Award for Best Actress. She subsequently starred in the drama More Than Ever (2022).

Krieps continued her film work in 2023 with roles in Ingeborg Bachmann – Journey into the Desert, the action feature The Three Musketeers: D'Artagnan, and Viggo Mortensen's revisionist Western drama The Dead Don't Hurt, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. That same year, she became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Outside of screen acting, she has appeared in commercial initiatives, including a 2025 Rimowa campaign with eyewear maker Mykita alongside Udo Kier and an anniversary campaign for fashion brand Bottega Veneta.

Krieps relocated to Berlin in her early twenties and holds dual citizenship in Luxembourg and Germany. She has two children from a previous relationship with German actor Jonas Laux, and in May 2025 she married film production assistant Lazaros Gounaridis. During her career, Krieps has also participated in broader public discussions, including the 2021 German actor initiative #allesdichtmachen concerning pandemic restrictions, as well as industry discussions surrounding the #MeToo movement and legal controversies related to Corsage cast members.
