Rebecca Hall

Rebecca Maria Hall is an English actress and filmmaker who has performed across stage, film, and television. She began her acting career as a child before gaining widespread recognition through her breakthrough role in Christopher Nolan's 2006 thriller film The Prestige. Over her career, she has performed in major studio releases, independent features, and acclaimed theater productions, eventually expanding her work into screenwriting, directing, and producing.

Born in London on May 3, 1982, Hall is the daughter of American opera singer Maria Ewing and English stage director Sir Peter Hall. Her maternal lineage includes mixed-race African-American and Dutch heritage. Hall grew up alongside five paternal half-siblings and attended Roedean School, where she served as head girl. She later studied English literature at St Catharine's College, Cambridge. During her time at Cambridge, she actively participated in student theater, formed her own drama group, and performed with the Marlowe Society before leaving university in 2002 prior to her final year.

Hall made her professional acting debut at nine years old in a 1992 television adaptation of The Camomile Lawn, directed by her father. Her professional stage debut followed in 2002 as Vivie in her father's production of Mrs. Warren's Profession at London's Strand Theatre, earning her an Ian Charleson Award. Over subsequent years, she performed extensively on stage in productions such as As You Like It, Man and Superman, The Winter's Tale, The Cherry Orchard, and Twelfth Night. She later made her Broadway debut in 2013 starring in the play Machinal.

After making her feature film debut in the 2006 comedy-drama Starter for 10, Hall achieved her cinematic breakthrough in The Prestige. In 2008, she starred in Woody Allen's romantic comedy Vicky Cristina Barcelona, receiving a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. That same year, she appeared in Ron Howard's historical drama Frost/Nixon.

Hall continued to build a diverse body of screen work across various genres. In 2009, she appeared in the miniseries Red Riding: 1974, winning the British Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actress. She went on to appear in the crime drama The Town, the horror film The Awakening, and the superhero film Iron Man 3. Her performance in the 2012 miniseries Parade's End earned her a BAFTA Television Award nomination for Best Actress. In 2016, she earned critical acclaim for her portrayal of television news reporter Christine Chubbuck in the biographical drama Christine.

In 2021, Hall made her feature film directorial debut with the period drama Passing, which she also adapted for the screen and co-produced. Based on Nella Larsen's 1929 novel and inspired by her own family history, the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and earned Hall BAFTA nominations for Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. Her other film projects include the horror-thriller The Night House and the MonsterVerse releases Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

In her personal life, Hall was in a relationship with director Sam Mendes from 2011 to 2013. In 2014, she met actor Morgan Spector while co-starring in a Broadway production. The couple married in 2015 and welcomed a daughter in 2018.
