Ben Kingsley

Sir Ben Kingsley, born Krishna Pandit Bhanji, is an English actor whose career spans seven decades across stage, television, and film. He is best known for his portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi in Richard Attenborough's 1982 biographical film Gandhi, a role that earned him widespread international recognition. Over his career, Kingsley has received an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, a Grammy Award, and two Golden Globe Awards, along with multiple nominations for Primetime Emmy and Laurence Olivier Awards. He was knighted in 2002 for his contributions to the British film industry.

Kingsley was born on December 31, 1943, in Snainton, North Riding of Yorkshire, to an English mother who worked as an actress and model, and a father of Gujarati Indian heritage born in Zanzibar. Raised in Pendlebury, Lancashire, Kingsley was brought up in the Quaker faith. He attended Manchester Grammar School and later studied at De La Salle College in Salford, where he participated in amateur theater. He made his professional stage debut at age 23 following his graduation. Early in his career, he chose the stage name Ben Kingsley to avoid potential casting barriers associated with his birth name.

Kingsley began his career primarily in the theater, joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1967 and remaining focused on stage work for fifteen years. He made his West End debut in As You Like It and performed in classic productions such as Much Ado About Nothing, Richard III, The Tempest, Hamlet, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. He made his Broadway debut in 1971 and later performed with the Royal National Theatre. Alongside his theater work, he took on early television roles in programs like Coronation Street and Crown Court, and made his feature film debut in the 1972 thriller Fear Is the Key.

His major career breakthrough came in 1982 with the title role in Gandhi, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor and the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Following this success, Kingsley appeared in notable films including Betrayal, Maurice, and Bugsy, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. In 1993, he portrayed Itzhak Stern in Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List, earning a BAFTA nomination, and appeared in films such as Sneakers, Dave, Searching for Bobby Fischer, Death and the Maiden, and Twelfth Night.

Kingsley earned additional Academy Award nominations for his performances in the psychological crime film Sexy Beast and the drama House of Sand and Fog. His television performances in Murderers Among Us: The Simon Wiesenthal Story, Joseph, Anne Frank: The Whole Story, and Mrs. Harris received Primetime Emmy Award nominations.

In subsequent years, Kingsley featured in major productions such as Shutter Island, Hugo, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and Ender's Game, while providing voice work for The Boxtrolls and The Jungle Book. He portrayed Trevor Slattery in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in Iron Man 3, All Hail the King, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and the series Wonder Man. Kingsley was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2010 and received the Britannia Award in 2014.
