He made his Broadway debut in 1971 and later performed with the Royal National Theatre. His major career breakthrough came in 1982 with the title role in Gandhi, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor and the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Following this success, Kingsley appeared in notable films including Betrayal, Maurice, and Bugsy, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. In 1993, he portrayed Itzhak Stern in Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List, earning a BAFTA nomination, and appeared in films such as Sneakers, Dave, Searching for Bobby Fischer, Death and the Maiden, and Twelfth Night.

Kingsley earned additional Academy Award nominations for his performances in the psychological crime film Sexy Beast and the drama House of Sand and Fog. His television performances in Murderers Among Us: The Simon Wiesenthal Story, Joseph, Anne Frank: The Whole Story, and Mrs. Harris received Primetime Emmy Award nominations.

In subsequent years, Kingsley featured in major productions such as Shutter Island, Hugo, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and Ender's Game, while providing voice work for The Boxtrolls and The Jungle Book.
