Sofia Boutella

Sofia Boutella is an Algerian actress, dancer, and model. She first gained international recognition through her professional dance career, performing alongside prominent recording artists and featuring in major commercial campaigns. She later transitioned into acting, earning prominent roles in major action, science fiction, and drama films.

Boutella was born on April 3, 1982, in the Bab El Oued district of Algiers, Algeria. She was raised in an artistic household by her architect mother and her father, jazz musician Safy Boutella. Her brother, Seif, works as a visual effects artist in the entertainment industry. She began classical dance education at age five. In 1992, at the age of 10, she moved with her family to France during the Algerian Civil War. Living in Paris, she took up rhythmic gymnastics and joined the French national team at age 18.

While growing up in Paris, Boutella became interested in hip hop and street dance. She joined the Vagabond Crew, which won the Battle of the Year in 2006, and participated in the group Chiennes de Vie and Aphrodites. Beginning at age 17, she rehearsed with Spanish choreographer Blanca Li. Her major breakthrough as a dancer came in 2007 when she was selected for the Jamie King choreography in Nike Women's "Keep Up" campaign. Boutella subsequently served as a backup dancer for Madonna for six years, performing in music videos, concert tours, and at the 2012 Super Bowl XLVI. She also worked with Rihanna and starred in the 2011 music video for Michael Jackson's "Hollywood Tonight."

Boutella began dancing in film, television, commercials, and concerts before pursuing a full-time acting career in 2014. Her breakthrough acting role came as the lead character Eva in the 2012 British drama film StreetDance 2. Seeking supporting roles to learn from experienced actors, she appeared in Kingsman: The Secret Service in 2015, which jump-started her acting career. In 2016, she played the alien warrior Jaylah in Star Trek Beyond.

In 2017, Boutella played a French secret agent in Atomic Blonde and starred as the titular character in The Mummy. That year, GQ named her the best new action star of 2017 and Vanity Fair identified her as the season's breakout action star. She went on to play lead and central characters, appearing in Gaspar Noé's psychological horror film Climax, the HBO drama film Fahrenheit 451, and the action thriller Hotel Artemis in 2018.

Her subsequent projects include an episode of Modern Love in 2019, the film Prisoners of the Ghostland in 2021, and the television series SAS: Rogue Heroes, playing French spy Eve Mansour in 2022 and 2025. She was also cast as the lead in Zack Snyder's sci-fi adventure Rebel Moon duology, released in 2023 and 2024. Boutella maintains strong ties to her Algerian roots. From March 2014 until October 2018, she was in a relationship with Irish actor Robert Sheehan.
