Toby Jones

Toby Edward Heslewood Jones is an English performer recognized for his work as a character actor across theatre, film, television, and radio productions. Born in London in September 1966, he spent his youth in Oxford alongside his two brothers. Raised by parents who were both active in the performing arts, he received his early education in Oxfordshire before pursuing formal drama studies at the University of Manchester. He later completed further theatrical instruction at L'École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Jones established a strong foundation on stage, gaining major theatrical recognition in 2001 for his portrayal of Arthur in the comedy production The Play What I Wrote, which earned him a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Over the following decades, he maintained an active presence in live theatre, appearing in works such as Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, The Painter, and The Birthday Party. In 2020, he took on the titular role in a revival of Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, securing a second Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor.

After making his screen debut in the 1992 period drama Orlando, Jones appeared in small parts across several motion pictures, including Naked, Ever After, and Finding Neverland. His wider critical recognition arrived with his lead portrayal of author Truman Capote in the 2006 biographical film Infamous. His subsequent feature credits include The Painted Veil, The Mist, W., Frost/Nixon, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Berberian Sound Studio, and First Cow. Additionally, he provided the voice for the character Dobby in the Harry Potter film series.

Expanding into major global film franchises, Jones portrayed Arnim Zola in Marvel Cinematic Universe titles such as Captain America: The First Avenger and its sequel, while also featuring in The Hunger Games series, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. On television, he achieved critical acclaim for his performance as Alfred Hitchcock in the 2012 television movie The Girl, securing nominations for a Golden Globe, a Primetime Emmy, and a BAFTA. He subsequently gained further television accolades, winning a BAFTA for his work in the comedy series Detectorists and earning additional nominations for his roles in Marvellous and the dramatized series Mr Bates vs The Post Office.

Beyond on-camera and stage roles, Jones has frequently contributed to radio programming and audiobook recordings, lending his voice to productions of classics like An Inspector Calls, The Corrupted, and Henry IV, Part 1. He also expanded into screenwriting by co-creating and starring in the 2019 television comedy Don't Forget the Driver. In his personal life, he married his long-time partner Karen in 2015, and the couple has two daughters. Connected to Stoke-on-Trent through his father's background, he serves as a patron for the local Claybody Theatre and supports the city's football club.
