Fiennes was born the eldest of six children to Mark Fiennes, a farmer and photographer, and Jennifer Lash, a writer. Raised in his mother's Catholic faith, he attended Bishop Wordsworth's School in Salisbury from 1976 to 1981. He initially studied painting at Chelsea College of Arts before deciding to pursue acting. He completed his dramatic training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, graduating in 1985.
Beginning his acting career at the Open Air Theatre and the Royal National Theatre, Fiennes achieved early prominence performing Shakespearean roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He made his screen debut in the 1990 British television film A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia, followed by his feature film debut as Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights in 1992.
