Norton was born on August 18, 1969, in Boston, Massachusetts, and raised in Columbia, Maryland. His mother was an English teacher, and his father served as a Marine lieutenant, environmental lawyer, and federal prosecutor. Inspired by local theatrical productions, Norton began acting at an early age. He graduated from Yale College in 1991 with a degree in history, studied Japanese, and briefly worked in Osaka, Japan, for his grandfather's non-profit real estate corporation before relocating to New York City to pursue acting.
In New York, Norton studied method acting and performed in off-Broadway productions. He caught the attention of playwright Edward Albee, who cast him in Fragments. Norton made his feature film debut in Primal Fear (1996), earning critical acclaim, a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor, and an Academy Award nomination. He followed this with roles in The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996), Everyone Says I Love You (1996), and Rounders (1998).
In 1998, Norton starred as a redeemed neo-Nazi in American History X, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and winning a Golden Satellite Award. The following year, he portrayed the narrator in Fight Club (1999), which later attained a cult following. In 2000, Norton made his directorial debut with the romantic comedy Keeping the Faith. He co-founded the production company Class 5 Films in 2003 and served as director or producer on films such as Down in the Valley (2005) and The Painted Veil (2006).
Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Norton appeared in films including The Score (2001), 25th Hour (2002), Frida (2002), The Italian Job (2003), The Illusionist (2006), Moonrise Kingdom (2012), and The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014). His largest commercial successes include Red Dragon (2002), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), The Incredible Hulk (2008), and The Bourne Legacy (2012). Norton earned additional Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor for his roles in Birdman (2014) and A Complete Unknown (2024). He also directed and starred in Motherless Brooklyn (2019) and appeared in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022) and The Invite (2026).
In addition to his creative career, Norton is an environmental activist and social entrepreneur. He serves as a trustee for Enterprise Community Partners, an affordable housing non-profit, and as president of the American branch of the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust. He is also the United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for Biodiversity.
