Elizabeth Marvel

Elizabeth Marvel is an American actress known for her performances across television, film, and theater. She has gained widespread recognition for her main and recurring television roles, including playing Detective Nancy Parras on the crime series The District, Solicitor General Heather Dunbar on House of Cards, and President Elizabeth Keane on Homeland. Over the course of her career, she has performed extensively in off-Broadway and Broadway stage productions.

Born in Los Angeles, California, on November 27, 1969, Marvel grew up in Mohnton, Pennsylvania. She pursued formal acting training at the Interlochen Arts Academy before continuing her studies at the Juilliard School.

Marvel began her professional acting career in the early 1990s on the stage. Her professional debut occurred in 1992, when she played Isabella in a production of Measure for Measure at Canada's Stratford Festival. Throughout the decade and into the 2000s, she built a prominent career in off-Broadway theater. She originated the role of Brooke Wyeth in the off-Broadway staging of Other Desert Cities and later returned to play the character again on stage.

Marvel achieved broader public notice through her television work, beginning with a regular role on CBS's The District from 2000 to 2004. She went on to secure recurring and guest appearances on numerous television projects, such as Lights Out, Nurse Jackie, Person of Interest, 30 Rock, The Good Wife, and The Newsroom. She played defense attorney Rita Calhoun across multiple episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit between 2012 and 2025. Her additional television credits include the second season of the FX series Fargo, the Netflix miniseries Unbelievable, the series Manifest as "The Major", and a lead role in the CW television pilot Blink.

In feature films, Marvel has appeared in a variety of high-profile projects. Her screen credits include the Coen brothers' Burn After Reading (2008), Synecdoche, New York, and the 2010 film True Grit, in which she portrayed the adult Mattie Ross. She has also appeared in The Bourne Legacy (2012), Hyde Park on Hudson (2012), Lincoln (2012), alongside her husband, The Meyerowitz Stories, and Disclosure Day. In 2009, she portrayed author Louisa May Alcott in a PBS American Masters documentary special.

For her theater performances, Marvel has earned multiple Obie Awards, receiving honors for her work in Thérèse Raquin, Misalliance, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Hedda Gabler. In 2009, her performance in the play Fifty Words earned her a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Play.

In her personal life, Marvel married actor Bill Camp in September 2004, and the couple welcomed a son in 2007. In 2020, she shared that she and her family reside on a farm located in Vermont.
