About H.E.R.

Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, known professionally as H.E.R. (an acronym for "Having Everything Revealed"), is an American R&B singer-songwriter. Born on June 27, 1997, in Vallejo, California, to a Filipino mother and an African-American father, she was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. Coming from a musical household where her father played in a cover band and her mother's family performed frequently, Wilson developed an early interest in music influenced by her family's jam sessions and karaoke performances.

Wilson began her entertainment career as a child performing under her birth name, Gabi Wilson. At age ten, she played piano on the Today Show and performed at the Apollo Theater. Managed early in her youth by Overbrook Entertainment, she appeared on television shows such as Maury, Good Morning America, and The View, played at the 2010 BET Awards, and made her acting debut in the 2010 Nickelodeon television film School Gyrls. In 2011, at age 14, she signed a recording contract with RCA Records via J Records, later releasing her debut single, "Something to Prove," in 2014.

In 2016, Wilson rebranded under the stage name H.E.R. and released her debut extended play, H.E.R. Volume 1. She followed this project with additional EPs before releasing her self-titled compilation album in 2017. The compilation reached number 23 on the Billboard 200 chart and earned her two Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Album and Best R&B Performance for her single "Best Part" with Daniel Caesar. Her second compilation album, I Used to Know Her (2019), met with similar commercial success and earned five Grammy nominations.

Wilson achieved further acclaim in 2021 when her single "I Can't Breathe" won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year. That same year, her song "Fight for You," written for the film Judas and the Black Messiah, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance, making her the first Academy Award winner born in Generation Z. In June 2021, she released her debut full-length studio album, Back of My Mind, which peaked at number six on the Billboard 200.

Beyond her recording projects, Wilson has performed at high-profile events, including singing "America the Beautiful" at Super Bowl LV in 2021 and appearing during Usher's Super Bowl LVIII performance in 2024. She made her big-screen acting debut in the 2023 film adaptation of The Color Purple and starred as Belle in the 2022 television special Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration. In 2022, she won a Children's and Family Emmy Award for her contributions to the animated series We the People, and she later performed at the 2024 Summer Olympics closing ceremony.

H.E.R.'s musical style consists largely of R&B ballads characterized by personal and emotional themes. She has cited Prince, Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Jimi Hendrix, Sharon Cuneta, and Jay R among her influences. Initially maintaining a mysterious public persona to keep focus primarily on her music, Wilson later transitioned to new artist management under Lighthouse Management + Media in 2024 following legal disputes with her former management.
