Born in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 31, 1996, to Derrick and Andrea Hamilton, Normani was raised in Pearland, Texas, alongside two older half-sisters, Ashlee and Arielle. She attended private school before being homeschooled from the sixth grade onward. From the age of three, she competed in dance, gymnastics, and beauty pageants, traveling between Houston and Los Angeles with her mother for auditions. She recorded her first song at age 13 and appeared in the HBO series Treme.

Beyond her standalone music releases, Normani contributed to the soundtracks for Charlie's Angels and Birds of Prey, collaborating with artists including Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, and Megan Thee Stallion. Her solo work earned an MTV Video Music Award for Best R&B Video for "Waves" and a Soul Train Music Award for "Wild Side." In television and film, she served as an advisor on NBC's The Voice, voiced a character on The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, made a cameo in Cardi B's "WAP" music video, and made her feature film acting debut in Freaky Tales.
