Chrisley was born in Georgia and raised in Westminster, South Carolina. He is the eldest of three sons born to Elizabeth "Faye" Chrisley and Gene Raymond Chrisley, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War who died in 2012. His brother Derrick passed away in infancy in 1971, and his other brother is named Randy. His mother worked up to sixty hours per week at a local textile mill to support the family. Although born Michael Todd, he has gone by his middle name since childhood.
Chrisley began his career as a real estate investor, managing properties and overseeing developments. In 2014, he achieved widespread recognition with the launch of Chrisley Knows Best. The show's success generated spin-offs, including Growing Up Chrisley, which focused on his children Chase and Savannah. In 2016, Chrisley released the country single "Infinite Love" with Sara Evans, which reached number 39 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
In August 2019, Chrisley and his wife Julie were indicted on 12 federal counts, including conspiracy to commit bank fraud, wire fraud, and tax evasion, after prosecutors alleged they used falsified financial records to secure over $30 million in loans. Following a trial in Atlanta, both were convicted on all counts in June 2022. In November 2022, Chrisley was sentenced to 12 years in prison and ordered to pay $17.8 million in restitution alongside his wife. They began their prison terms in January 2023.
The United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit affirmed Chrisley's conviction in June 2024. On May 28, 2025, President Donald Trump granted full presidential pardons to Todd and Julie Chrisley, resulting in their release from federal custody hours later.
Following their release, Todd and Julie Chrisley returned to television by filming the Lifetime reality series The Chrisleys: Back to Reality, which premiered in September 2025. The series documented their incarceration, pardons, and return home. The couple also competed together as "Croissants" on season 14 of The Masked Singer.
Chrisley married Julie Hughes in 1996, and the couple has three children together: Chase, Savannah, and Grayson. He also has two children, Lindsie and Kyle, from a previous marriage, and later adopted Kyle's daughter, Chloe. His family frequently appeared alongside him across his reality television projects.
