McDormand was born in Gibson City, Illinois, and was adopted at eighteen months old by Noreen and Vernon McDormand. Her adoptive father was a Disciples of Christ pastor and her mother was a nurse and receptionist. Because of her father's work, the family lived in several small towns across Illinois, Georgia, Kentucky, and Tennessee before settling in Monessen, Pennsylvania. McDormand graduated from Monessen High School in 1975, earned a Bachelor of Arts in theater from Bethany College in 1979, and completed a Master of Fine Arts at the Yale School of Drama in 1982.
She made her professional acting debut on stage in Derek Walcott's play In a Fine Castle. In 1984, she made her film debut in Blood Simple, directed by Joel Coen, whom she married that same year. During the 1980s, she appeared in films including Crimewave and Raising Arizona, and on television in Hill Street Blues. She earned a Tony Award nomination for a 1988 Broadway revival of A Streetcar Named Desire and received her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Mississippi Burning (1988).
In the 1990s, McDormand appeared in Darkman, Miller's Crossing, Short Cuts, and Primal Fear. She achieved major acclaim for starring as pregnant police chief Marge Gunderson in Fargo (1996), winning her first Academy Award for Best Actress and a Screen Actors Guild Award. She also received an Emmy nomination for the 1996 television film Hidden in America.
During the 2000s and 2010s, McDormand earned additional Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominations for Almost Famous (2000) and North Country (2005). Her work included roles in The Man Who Wasn't There, Burn After Reading, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and Moonrise Kingdom. In 2011, she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for Good People. She later produced and starred in the HBO miniseries Olive Kitteridge (2014), winning two Primetime Emmy Awards, and starred in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017), winning her second Best Actress Oscar, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe, and a SAG Award.
In 2020, McDormand produced and starred in Nomadland, winning Academy Awards for Best Actress and Best Picture. This made her the first person to win both acting and producing Oscars for the same film. Her subsequent projects include roles in The Tragedy of Macbeth, The French Dispatch, and Women Talking.
