John Turturro

John Michael Turturro is an American actor and filmmaker recognized for his expansive work in independent cinema, mainstream blockbusters, and television. He is particularly known for his extensive artistic partnerships with directors Spike Lee and the Coen brothers. Over the course of his career, he has earned a Primetime Emmy Award, a Cannes Film Festival Award, and nominations for three Golden Globe Awards.

Born on February 28, 1957, in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, Turturro was raised in a Catholic household as the middle child of a former World War II naval yard worker and amateur jazz singer mother, and an Italian-born carpenter and Navy veteran father. At six years old, his family relocated to Rosedale, Queens. Turturro pursued dramatic arts in higher education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in theater studies from the State University of New York at New Paltz in 1979, followed by a Master of Fine Arts from the Yale School of Drama in 1983.

Turturro made his screen debut as an uncredited extra in Raging Bull (1980) before making a notable theatrical impression originating the lead role in Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, which earned him an Obie Award Off-Broadway. Following a supporting turn in To Live and Die in L.A. (1985), he achieved his major film breakthrough in Five Corners (1987). His performance caught the attention of Spike Lee, leading to Do the Right Thing (1989) and establishing a partnership spanning nine films, including Mo' Better Blues, Jungle Fever, and Clockers.

Simultaneously, Turturro developed a fruitful ongoing creative connection with the Coen brothers. He starred in Miller's Crossing (1990), portrayed the title character in Barton Fink (1991)—a role that won him Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival—and appeared in iconic films such as The Big Lebowski (1998) and O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000). Beyond his auteur collaborations, he appeared in studio projects including Quiz Show (1994), Fearless (1993), several Adam Sandler comedies, Secret Window, and the Transformers franchise playing agent Seymour Simmons.

In addition to acting, Turturro has written, produced, and directed feature films, beginning with Mac (1992), followed by Illuminata (1998), Romance and Cigarettes (2005), the documentary Passione (2010), Fading Gigolo (2013), and The Jesus Rolls (2020). He also made his stage directorial debut on Broadway in 2011 with the comedic play collection Relatively Speaking.

Turturro's television achievements include a guest turn on the comedy series Monk, which garnered him a Primetime Emmy Award, along with prominent roles in miniseries such as The Night Of and The Plot Against America. In recent years, he portrayed Carmine Falcone in The Batman (2022) and joined the main cast of the series Severance. Holding dual American and Italian citizenship, he lives in Park Slope, Brooklyn, with his family and serves on the jury for the New York International Children's Film Festival.
