Taylor was born on 11 July 1984 in Launceston, Tasmania. Her English parents, Christine and Nigel Taylor, had emigrated to Australia from Dorset and Lancashire. She attended Trevallyn Primary School and Riverside High School. At age 16, she moved to Sydney to pursue acting, later returning to Launceston to finish high school. She subsequently studied history and politics at the University of Sydney before leaving her studies in 2006.
During her teenage years, Taylor worked as a model and won the title of Miss Teen Tasmania in 1998, also becoming a state finalist for Miss Universe/Miss World. She made her acting debut in the 2004 television serial The Mystery of Natalie Wood. She then appeared in television projects such as Dynasty: The Making of a Guilty Pleasure and the feature films Man-Thing and See No Evil. Taylor gained early television recognition portraying Sasha Forbes on the Australian drama series headLand, which earned her a nomination for a Logie Award for Most Popular New Female Talent in 2006.
