Born on August 8, 1977, in Rocky River, Ohio, Chernus pursued formal training in the performing arts. He developed his craft as a student in the Drama Division at the Juilliard School.
Chernus established himself as an accomplished theater actor through extensive work on New York stages. He earned an Obie Award in 2011 and received a nomination for a Lucille Lortel Award for his work in Lisa Kron's play In the Wake at The Public Theater. His other stage credits include performing opposite David Hyde Pierce in Close Up Space at New York City Center for the Manhattan Theater Club, as well as acting in a Second Stage Theatre production of Lips Together, Teeth Apart alongside America Ferrera in 2014.
Throughout his theatrical career, Chernus has performed at numerous venues, including Playwrights Horizons, the Roundabout Theatre Company, Primary Stages, New York Theatre Workshop, and the Atlantic Theater Company. He frequently collaborated with the Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, where he starred as KJ in Annie Baker's play The Aliens, a production highlighted by The New York Times as the top play of 2010.
In addition to his stage work, Chernus expanded into feature films and television series. His film appearances include roles in Men in Black 3, The Bourne Legacy, Jack and Diane, Captain Phillips, and the superhero movie Spider-Man: Homecoming. On television, he joined the main cast of Orange Is the New Black as the brother of the main character, Piper Chapman.
In recent years, Chernus has continued to secure high-profile roles in television streaming projects. He landed a role in the Apple TV+ series Severance and portrayed Tom in the 2023 Amazon Prime Video miniseries Dead Ringers, which earned a Peabody Award. He was also selected to play the title role of John Wayne Gacy in the Peacock series Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy, scheduled to premiere in October 2025.
