Brendan Fraser

Brendan James Fraser is an American and Canadian actor known for his roles in comedies, blockbusters, and dramatic films. He achieved early prominence in the 1990s and gained global stardom playing Rick O'Connell in The Mummy franchise. Following a period of reduced screen activity, his career experienced a major resurgence in the 2020s, culminating in critical acclaim and top acting awards.

Fraser was born on December 3, 1968, in Indianapolis to Canadian parents Carol Mary and Peter Fraser. He grew up as the youngest of four brothers with Irish, Scottish, German, Czech, and French-Canadian heritage. Due to his father's work as a foreign service officer, his family moved frequently across the United States, Canada, and Europe. His interest in performing began during a childhood trip to London after attending a West End production of Oliver!. Fraser graduated from Seattle's Cornish College of the Arts in 1990 before relocating to Hollywood to pursue a film career.

After making his film debut in Dogfight (1991), Fraser achieved his breakthrough in 1992 with the comedy Encino Man and the drama School Ties. Throughout the mid-1990s, he starred in films such as With Honors, Airheads, and The Passion of Darkly Noon. He also made his professional stage debut in 1995 in Four Dogs and a Bone at the Geffen Playhouse.

In 1997, Fraser achieved major commercial success starring in George of the Jungle. His international stardom expanded significantly when he played Rick O'Connell in The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns (2001). Alongside these blockbusters, Fraser earned critical acclaim for his dramatic role in Gods and Monsters (1998), starred in The Quiet American (2002), and appeared in the ensemble drama Crash (2004). He also received praise for starring as Brick in a 2001 West End production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Fraser's film career slowed from the late 2000s through the mid-2010s due to box office setbacks, health issues requiring several surgeries, personal difficulties including a divorce, and a mental health crisis resulting from a 2003 sexual assault committed against him by Philip Berk. During this period, Fraser shifted toward television, earning notable roles in series such as The Affair, Trust, and Doom Patrol.

His film career was revitalized in the 2020s, a turnaround dubbed "The Brennaissance" by fans. Following a role in Steven Soderbergh's No Sudden Move (2021), Fraser starred in Darren Aronofsky's drama The Whale (2022). His performance brought him critical acclaim and the Academy Award for Best Actor, making him the first Canadian to win the category. His subsequent work includes Killers of the Flower Moon, the audiobook drama The Downloaded, and upcoming roles in Pressure and a fourth The Mummy installment.

Fraser holds dual American and Canadian citizenship and was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2006. Outside of acting, he serves on the board of directors for FilmAid International and is an amateur photographer and archer. He has three sons from his marriage to actress Afton Smith, and since 2022, he has been in a relationship with makeup artist Jeanne Moore.
