Jon Bernthal

Jonathan Edward Bernthal is an American actor known for portraying intense and ethically complex figures. He gained widespread prominence for playing Shane Walsh on the horror series The Walking Dead and earned further acclaim playing Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher, across several Marvel media projects. His television career also highlights acclaimed roles in the miniseries We Own This City and the series The Bear, alongside appearances in major feature films such as The Wolf of Wall Street, Fury, Sicario, and Ford v Ferrari.

Bernthal was born on September 20, 1976, in Washington, D.C., and raised in Cabin John, Maryland. After graduating from Sidwell Friends School in 1995, he attended Skidmore College before leaving to train at the Moscow Art Theatre School in Russia, where he also played professional baseball as a catcher. He later attended Harvard University's Institute for Advanced Theater Training, completing his studies in 2002.

Relocating to New York City, Bernthal performed in dozens of regional and off-Broadway plays, including projects with his theater group, Fovea Floods. He took early television guest roles on shows like CSI: Miami and How I Met Your Mother, and appeared in films such as World Trade Center. After moving to Los Angeles in 2006, he secured regular roles on television series including The Class and Eastwick.

Bernthal achieved a major career breakthrough in 2010 when he was cast as Shane Walsh in the drama series The Walking Dead, a role he played through 2012. Over the following years, he established a prolific film career with supporting roles in notable releases, including Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, The Ghost Writer, The Wolf of Wall Street, Fury, Sicario, and Show Me a Hero.

In 2015, Bernthal joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Frank Castle / The Punisher, debuting in season two of Daredevil before headlining the spin-off series The Punisher from 2017 to 2019. During this period, he starred in feature films such as The Accountant, Wind River, Baby Driver, Widows, The Peanut Butter Falcon, and Ford v Ferrari. He also provided voice acting and motion capture for video games in the Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon series and created an interview podcast titled Real Ones.

In the 2020s, Bernthal starred as Wayne Jenkins in the HBO miniseries We Own This City and played Michael Berzatto in The Bear, winning a Primetime Emmy Award for the latter. He reprised his Punisher role in Daredevil: Born Again, co-wrote and starred in the special The Punisher: One Last Kill, and appeared in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Bernthal made his Broadway debut in 2026 in Dog Day Afternoon and appeared in films including The Accountant 2 and The Odyssey.
