Born in London and raised in East Sussex, Cox is the youngest of five children born to his mother and his publisher father. He was raised Catholic and attended private boarding schools in East Sussex and Dorset. Although he did not consider acting as a profession until his final years of school, he decided to pursue the craft after graduating in 2001, moving to London and enrolling at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in 2002.
Cox earned his first professional screen credit at eighteen in the 2003 film Dot the i, followed by his casting as Lorenzo in the 2004 film The Merchant of Venice, which prompted him to leave drama school early. During breaks from the series, he appeared off-Broadway in Incognito and co-starred in the 2018 film King of Thieves. Following the end of Daredevil, he starred in Harold Pinter's Betrayal in the West End and on Broadway in 2019.
In recent years, Cox starred in the Irish crime drama Kin from 2021 to 2023 and the Netflix spy miniseries Treason in 2022. He reprised his role as Daredevil in Marvel Studios projects such as Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Echo, before leading the revival series Daredevil: Born Again, where he also serves as an executive producer. Additionally, he voiced the character Gustave in the video game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, receiving a nomination for Best Performance at The Game Awards 2025.
In his personal life, Cox married television producer Samantha Thomas in September 2018, and the couple has a daughter and a son. The family resides in Connecticut, and Cox became a naturalized United States citizen in January 2025, holding dual UK and US citizenship.
